that looks like a US-340 shield.  Here's the most obscure branch of US-40: in Nevada and Oregon, they attempted to sign the last branch, from Winnemucca to Denio Junction, across Adel Pass, to Lakeview and Klamath Falls, as US-140.  Not a bad idea, since the road does cover a good distance and exist in two states, but Maryland had the number.  So nowadays the route, from where it branches off US-95 north of Winnemucca, all the way to its west end, is state route 140, in Nevada and Oregon.

here is what a Nevada US shield would look like.  It is a replica I had manufactured to the correct 1930s Nevada specs.

here is an erroneous shield (Oregon is notorious for this!) at the US-395 junction:

this is not quite its western terminus in Klamath Falls, but it is the westernmost photo I have: note Reno as a control city!

I wasn't aware that OR and NV ever sought a US designation for 140.  But that would explain the number.

Small correction to your last post: the west end of 140 isn't in Klamath Falls.  140 continues west from there to end on OR 62 in White City, almost reaching I-5.

I have a picture somewhere of a sign in downtown K-Falls with US 140 and OR 97.  You're right about Oregon and sign goofs!

Correction to my last post: you didn't say K-Falls was the western terminus of 140.  My bad.

I edited my post ... I had originally thought that 140 ended in Klamath Falls, then discovered it went further west to state route 62.

Oregon is terrible with the sign goofs... their differentiation between US and state routes is the worst in the nation.

bet you didn't know US-27 passed through the Oregon Outback!

I'll play: here's one combining the sign goof discussion with US 20:

Jim

Staying on the US 20 errors - Massachusetts is horrible with this on all of their US highways.  Here's one from Lee, just off Exit 2 of the Mass Pike.
