Target to ban personal checks as payment in all stores starting this month
QuoteTarget has decided to phase out the acceptance of personal checks as a payment method in its stores starting later this month, signaling a shift towards more modern forms of transactions.

The move comes as check usage continues to wane in the face of rising credit and debit card use, along with the growth of digital payment options.

I want to know who the 1% of consumers are that still prefer to pay by check at retail stores.

And I'm pretty sure that is rounded up.

Inevitable given the popularity and ease of alternative/digital payment methods.

I approve of this.   Writing a check is time consuming and opens the merchant to fraud.

I know of no bank that will not give a checking customer a free debit card, not that that is the best method to pay, but even the old and poor can get one.

Not really shocking when direct deposit, debit and credit cards have been widely used for some time.

Nothing worse than getting stuck behind a check writer when all you want to do is buy a couple of snacks.

Last time I got stuck behind a check writer was just a few months ago, and I'm still mad at her.

How many years has it been since retailers had the ability to process the check right there and then at the register rather than the customer relying on "float time"? Plus, a debit is quicker than writing a check... of course, there is also ca$h.

A pretty decent percentage of check writers in retail nowadays are just people trying to commit fraud.  The last big check case I worked was around 2015 and was a register cash back scheme.

I still see a check-paying customer every now and then, but you don't even have to fill it out anymore. You just run a blank check through the reader, run it back again to frank it, and hand it back to the customer with the receipt. They can fill it out when they get home if they choose to.

For bills in the mail that charge a 5% "service fee" for credit/debit cards and ACH? Yes.

I had to write a check just today for a one-time medical payment. They didn't have a credit card payment portal, so I just sent in a check instead. That is the first check I wrote in about three months.

LOL. Pretty sure you are not being serious, but payment for a medical procedure not covered by insurance.

Of course we do. But we don't go bankrupt like in America.

To be perfectly clear, it was a payment for a completely elective test that I didn't think would be covered by insurance - yet it covered about a third. Yay!

I'm loving this, but, at this point, it has been so well-established that America's healthcare system is so middling compared to other developed countries in terms of health outcomes (except we're strangely the best at extracting bullets and "fragments" from people), that it's just to be taken for granted now and jokes like this are just old.  It's not like we're doing anything to improve.

$1198 gets eaten up by my insurance premium pretty darned quickly during the year.  Yep, if you're healthy, you can skate by for cheap.  But, if you're like me, where you were deemed healthy as a horse for decades only to have that one fateful checkup where you discover that without treatment, you're dead, facing $300,000+ in medical bills without insurance would have been daunting, whatever discount for a hypothetical uninsured would have been offered.

Then again, I do not entertain hypotheticals.  The world as it is is vexing enough.

Anyways...

yeah, who writes checks for everyday purchases at big box stores in the year of our lord 2024? Sure, if there's fees for debit/credit, whatever, but that's not a thing at most big retailers.

I live in a pretty rural area, and we have a growing population of Amish and Mennonite. Many times at the store I work at they will pay with check as they don't use credit or debit cards. The checks do go through electronically. Some do use cash more than others. But the nearest Target store is over 30 miles away, so I don't think too many of them go to Target. But the Amish and Mennonite will have to start carrying a lot more cash if my store stops accepting checks.

Myself, The only time I write a check anymore is the one-off bill that I wouldn't otherwise pay online through my bank's bill pay system, or to my mechanic, who works by himself and he doesn't take cards. Cash or check. Last check I wrote that was cashed was in March. Last check I wrote was to my daughter's friend as a graduation gift on June 1st. He still hasn't cashed it, I wonder if he knows what to do with it.

At my wife's shop, she gets a check about once or twice a week on average.  Down from once or twice a day on average several years ago, but I'm still shocked that some people prefer checks.

And then if we deposit them via cell phone deposit, it's 50 cents a check.  At the bank, it's free.  So we make a run up once a week to deposit them.  There's been a very occasional time that the check either bounced, or in one instance, the account was closed.  In that case, I found out the customer had died between the days of visiting the shop, and us cashing the check.
