That has to be a typo on the LA temperature.  How can there be a 51-degree difference in two cities in the same area of California?   I'm betting Los Angeles temperatures were a lot higher than 72 degrees.

Even Flagstaff and Phoenix, notorious for their climate differences, are only 28 degrees difference between two cities over hundred miles apart.

Nope. Maritime moderation does wonders, especially along the west coast where winds blow off of the ocean. I have seen temperatures drop a good 30+ degrees in a few miles while crossing a mountain range near the California coast on multiple occasions. See also how San Francisco, Monterey, and Eureka are routinely 60s-70s even on the hottest July days.

And don't get me wrong; I'm also well aware of the steep temperature differences between the Palm Desert areas and the Pacific Coasts....average difference can be about 30-35 degrees between the Santa Monica pier (74 degrees) and Thermal, CA (109 degrees).

But 50+ degrees at the same time??

Amazing how shitty having one mountain range between you and the coast can make things isn't it?  At my other work locale in Monterey it is in the mid-60F range right now.

And this is the time of year when that effect is the strongest. There have been some 50+ degree differences north of the Bay Area over the past couple days. South as well, as Paso Robles has been 50+ degrees warmer than the coast.

Quote from: Scott5114 on July 05, 2024, 08:23:38 PMMan, I wouldn't want to be in Palm Springs right now.

I would be interested to know if @kernals12 has changed his outlook on the climate now that he's experiencing things like 117° on the regular.

Quote from: kernals12 on December 27, 2020, 12:18:52 AMI loathe the cold. [...] Maybe climate change isn't so bad.

I haven't.

Speaking of 110F plus, it topped out at 112F today in Fresno.  The AC company finished up their work installing the new system at about 8:30 PM.  It has already dropped from 96F in the house to 83F.

Wow. 96 inside has to be unbearable, even with low humidity.

Probably got that high because of the AC repair people actively working and moving around.  The two previous days it only up to 88F and 89F.  I was setting the old AC at 82F, not as much of a departure to 88-89F while sitting in front of a fan.

Only a high of 75 and 85 respectively the past few days, but they're saying that we have a chance of breaking the all time hottest temp in Denver this weekend. Ick.

Nine months out of the year the weather here is close to perfect in Fresno.  I hadn't even run the AC until the first week of June.  Even this current heat wave is way above seasonal norms as usually the high is around 100F.

The three summer months is much akin to how winter was in Michigan.  There was similar processes my dad and I took to make sure the furnace was running before the season.  Likewise I don't spend nearly as much time outside.

There must be some very localized, very heavy rain, as the Whiting/East Chicago area is experiencing severe flooding and I'm less than 10 miles away and haven't had much rain at all.

That's been the story of the summer on the Front Range. Flooding in Castle Rock while we get absolutely none here about 15 minutes away.

Remnants of Hurricane Beryl.  No rain in the metro Detroit area right now, but that heavy rain is projected to hit us around midnight and into tomorrow.  I tend to get some flooding in my side yard and also into my garage; my first to-do when I get home tonight will be to get the rugs off the garage floor and make sure whatever else is on the floor is okay to get wet.

I just went through the same situation back east. It's 15 degrees cooler in my room now versus 24 hours ago.

As the remnants of Beryl move through, we are currently under an active tornado warning for the first time I can remember. There's a watch until 9PM and a warning ending shortly. As for actual conditions: light rain and low clouds with intermittent thunder, and some flash flooding on area roadways.

Today was the 5th day in the last 6 the official high temperature at South Lake Tahoe airport (elevation 6427 feet) hit 90°F (it only got to 89°F yesterday).  That equals the total number of 90°F days in all of 2023.  In a few years we never get to 90°F at all.

It does come with bone-dry 15% humidity.  Also it cools off at night; low temperature has been in the 40s each of those last 6 days so I'm pulling on a blanket at 3 a.m.

That actually sounds great to me. Crisp early mornings are the best.
