I went to two weddings this summer. Didn't wear a tie at either one. One was pretty fancy too, but I would guess 2/3 of the guys didn't have ties on.

Back in the day, I used to have to wear one for work every day. Now it's maybe 10 days a year or so.

A very good trend IMO.

Now I'm wondering if P13 ever had the nerve to ask Sault Sainte John Madden out?

I also went to two weddings this summer and wore a fancy vest and tie to both. I wasn't overdressed as both were semi-formal. I'll be the best man at a third this coming week, so a tie is required there.

I've worn a suit with no tie three times this summer. Twice were to nice restaurants where I felt it appropriate to wear something nicer and the third time was on a business trip earlier this week on which I didn't necessarily need the suit but just thought it seemed better than the other options. All three times were lighter-colored suits. I think a navy blue or dark grey Brooks Brothers suit might look a little odd without a tie.

My church has an unwritten rule about men wearing ties.  I can't remember not doing that (on Sunday, at least) since I was eleven (and couldn't remember how to tie one by myself).  When I was in Italy (and in training for it) I had to wear one pretty much every day.

When I started this job in 2002, I had to wear a tie every day to work.  That was gradually phased out in 2005, but sometimes when I've needed to after work (like today) I'll just wear it to work.

Maybe we should alert the forum staff there that he is potentially a predator.

They shouldn't have let him back in.  From what I recall they had him banned.

Me too. We wore a suit to work. When you got to your desk you took the jacket off and hung it up. Then put it back on before you left at night. You might wear it once in a while in a meeting if there were bigshots there.

Henry

When I went to church on Sunday, work on the weekdays and for every major event (school and college graduations, weddings/anniversaries, etc.), I had to wear a suit and tie. Nowadays, I'll most likely wear a polo shirt in place of the button-down ones that I had worn before with a suit, and it's been more common since the COVID thing hit, forcing me to work from home instead of at the office.

While scanning a Flickr thread about train stations in New York State, I spotted this entrance to the 155th Street Station on the IND Concourse Line (B and D trains);
https://www.flickr.com/photos/29997762@N05/52970392696/in/pool-1670273@N23/
And I was thinking that something like this might be good for the Wikimedia Commons page for this station. As it turns out they have that image, but an older version of it with more traditional features;
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:155_Sta_BD_jeh.jpg
I almost doubted they were the same entrance, but a slight GSV history coverage of the site proves they were.

And unfortunately, I forgot where I was going with this story.

I actually have a morbid curiosity about seeing Poip's views on the color of cats in the future.  (Unless that's the made-up one.  Horrifyingly, I can't tell for sure.)

My wife is subjecting me to a Mark Walberg movie that just came out on streaming called "The Union."  The movie is predictably middling to bad.  I'm more taken aback that Halle Berry looks this good at 58 years old.

Ugh.  My wife did the same to me.  Horrible movie.  JK Simmons looks like Hide the Pain Harold as he's forced to utter that garbage writing.

ETA:  My wife thought it was horrible, too.

From PC Gamer:

If you put hot dogs and pickles against an AM radio tower, they act as speakers. Also, don't do that
Acts as a speaker, yes. Also catches fire at an astonishing rate.
QuoteI'm not a scientist, but I would posit that the best kind of science is the kind where you set things on fire. That's probably the reason I'm not allowed to be left alone with the PC Gamer kit cupboard, but it turns out that Jeff Geerling may agree with me.

The Geerling Engineering team have been sticking various food items up against an AM radio tower and recording the results, which seem to mostly be of the incendiary kind. However, a surprising side-effect seems to be that certain, watery items appear to begin to "talk".

From The Independent (UK):

The name's Bond... 'Biffy' Bond? The real-life sailor, spy and friend of Ian Fleming who 'inspired 007'
The Bond-like adventures of Biffy began in 1916 in Russia and appear straight from the pages of 007 thrillers
Quote"The name is Dunderdale, 'Biffy' Wilfred Dunderdale," doesn't quite have the same steely ring as "Bond, James Bond", but a new book suggests that 007 was based on this improbably named sailor, spy and best friend of Ian Fleming.

The claims are made in a biography of Wilfred Dunderdale by Colonel Tim Spicer, a veteran British army soldier and adventurer who once led the biggest private army in Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and Sierra Leone.

"Biffy was a gentleman sailor, brave, eccentric and at the centre of international spy-craft, it makes him the perfect role model for 007," said Spicer, who spent three years researching this unsung hero for his book, A Suspicion of Spies, published this week.
