New York has set a precedent. Now it's okay to remove freeways.

Heh.  Freeways were removed elsewhere long before the Sheridan.

Don't forget about the inner loop. :bigass:

Yeah like Miller's West Side Highway in NYC.  That is in New York State and long before the Embarcadero.

I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've been around along time to see how many removed freeways there are long before this one in Missouri.  I've seen the Miller's Westside Highway go down and am old enough where I was a passenger in my parents car when that roadway was alive and well.

Well I thought he was proven wrong elsewhere, but it was another user who always posts with Rothman and not Rothman.

Just that two users who share the same ideas on posts can get your brain thinking that it's one person just like all telemarketers.  You have many, but we think of them as one person calling you over and over so you give crap to the most recent one about all calls from others.

That's all fine and dandy, but you were arguing against the demolition of freeways, right?

The current West Side Highway has been a remarkable success, to the point where any idea of a limited access highway has been abandoned.  Shoot, when I started my career, people were still wondering if old Westway-dedicated funding would be released for broader use...and it was.

You expected me to comment on this particular thread to throw shots at the I-81 project? I said nothing of the sort. Granted yes I've beat the dead horse more than a few times on this forum about it. But not on this thread. I'm indifferent about this project although I do have a weirdly profound love for double decker highways. This one is special because of the small town it's in.

Anyone know how much longer I have to drive it?

Can we please go back to discussing the I-229 St. Joseph Study? This non-stop bickering seems pointless to me, not to mention counterproductive.

roadman65

As far as I-229 goes, yes it's a shame it's being removed, but maybe it wasn't meant to be. The city is not that big to warrant that extra freeway. It was probably built to expect economic growth and so be it, it never materialized.  So they are left with a falling apart elevated structure and figuring out that it's more cost prohibitive to replace it.

However, arterials do have interchanges and yet some want to convert arterials to have none.  To me it doesn't sound right to replace an interchange with a stoplight under any circumstance.  Don't know why, but it feels funny.

So mixed feelings on this.

St. Joseph's population has declined modestly since I-229 was built. It's not in a freefall, but it's not growing, either. After I-29 was built, there just wasn't much of a need for a biggish city so close to Kansas City; most of the growth St. Joe would have otherwise experienced went to Kansas City instead.

I know it's too late, but it seems they could fit in a regular freeway in that area, with only the need to move the railroad tracks a few feet over at this small pinch point bounded by those billboards:

What am I missing that they didn't just do this in the '70s to start with?
I-290   I-294   I-55   (I-74)   (I-72)   I-40   I-30   US-59   US-190   TX-30   TX-6

seicer

That looks to be an old railroad yard, so moving those tracks might have been prohibitive at the time.

The steady population is quite remarkable. Since 1910, all but one census the population was between 70K and 80K.
