Quote from: pderocco on November 16, 2024, 01:58:57 AMA culvert is a tunnel, but for water, not for a road. Since this goes under some earth, it's a regular road tunnel, not a culvert.
I would say that what matters is how it's built, not what the road crosses.
I'm just looking it up in the online dictionaries. If water is routed under a road through a large round galvanized corrugated steel pipe, you'd call that a culvert, wouldn't you? I know I would. But if cars drove through a round pipe with a roadway in it, which is how lots of underwater tunnels are constructed, I'd call that a tunnel, not a pipe.
I feel like this is becoming an "I'll know it when I see it" distinction, because I would consider the first to be a culvert and most underwater tunnels to be tunnels.  But then there's Culvert Road, where the sign literally says culvert even though it goes under water...
Is it possible that that was originally an actual culvert carrying a stream, and it was repurposed for a road?

Quote from: ClassicHasClass on November 17, 2024, 06:24:56 PMI suspect this sign originally read Central Livermore and was greened out to say "Dwntn Livermore": https://maps.app.goo.gl/ap55u7nnMvU4ewBA7
So, of course, when the sign was replaced completely, giving Caltrans the opportunity to do it properly, what does it read?

If there's insufficient room for "Downtown Livermore" they could have just put "Downtown". Given that it's Livermore Ave, people would probably take a wild guess that it goes to Livermore and not Chicago or Madrid.

I wouldn't assume this. For example, Arlington St. in Boston doesn't go to Arlington, despite it being only five miles away. There are many other examples.

Staples probably didn't exist when this sign was installed.

And that's why they would never just put "Downtown" referring to Boston on an Arlington St sign.

Quite possibly. But it looks like some homemade sign put up on a city signpost that the city indulged, so it could be a year old. Can't find it in GSV, though, so I don't know.

Quote from: Amaury on November 17, 2024, 05:10:10 PMI've seen signs like this around Washington, and they're not faded, just blank.

This one is on WA 243 northbound before the junction with WA 26, installed in 2016: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NjckEHtjyudvnicr8

This one is on I-90 westbound at Exit 154, installed in 2016: https://maps.app.goo.gl/tKyuoF7J5aV3KDDG7

Those are two I remember. I think there are some more, though.

Perhaps incident signage that flips horizontally? I found this one on a gate for closing the freeway entrance, and it has a hinge in the middle.

Notice that DeBary on the sign for DeBary Hall has it as two words, but the street name in a distance signs it as one word " Debary ."

Even autocorrect says the one word is wrong as I had to rewrite the name. :bigass:

Also the end of I-4 at SR 400 at Daytona.  Odd is that SR 400 don't begin here as it was all along with I-4 from its commencement.

Similar case with this sign I took a photo of on the drive home from Fayetteville a few days ago, the legal name of the community itself is "Snowball" as one word, not two.

The first reassuring shield on US 58 Westbound.

The way the TO is white on blue while West is black on white is odd the way both are used.

However it's not to US 58 west but US 58 West.

Then again VA Beach don't care about its two US routes as signage for both are practically non existent. I remember before that part of the city got redeveloped, EB Laskin Road at Pacific Avenue did have a shield assembly for US 60 and a straight through for US 58 EB despite its termination one block ahead at Atlantic when the city had an implied Business Route 60 along Atlantic Ave once upon a time.

Considering that Laskin Road received a diet and speed bumps you wonder if US 58 got realigned to 31st Street, but no one decided to alert AASHTO or VDOT.

US 58 was truncated to Pacific Ave in May 1958.

In addition to the 58 straight arrow on  Laskin EB, there was a US 58 JUNCTION cutout SB on Atlantic still up in 1992.

Spotted these misshapen AL 117 shields in Valley Head, AL, today, where it appears the State of Alabama has annexed some of Georgia to the east:

It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

I thought it looked a little like they tacked on a mirror image of New Hampshire's Old Man of the Mountain profile at the bottom.
