After a white Christmas, we hit 62 yesterday which is extremely mild for late December. It was bitterly windy today though, with temps barely above 40.

After an above-average Christmas, we're cooling back down closer to normal for the end of the year.  On Christmas Day, four Texas cities exceeded 90 degrees.  McAllen and Edinburg both saw three consecutive days in the 90s from the 25th to the 27th.  McAllen Int'l AP recorded only its fourth (4th) 90-degree Christmas Day in the city's history (first time since 2015).  Corpus Christi reached 87 degrees on Christmas Day.

Our forecast for the last day of 2024:

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:      82 high; 66 low                  72 high; 54 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:  79 high; 58 low                  69 high; 52 low
LAREDO:                81 high; 56 low                  68 high; 48 low
MCALLEN:              82 high; 63 low                  73 high; 53 low

With the winds shifting from the SE (from the gulf) to SW (from Mexico), the dew points are simmering down, resulting in Heat Index not much (if at all) higher than the actual air temperature itself.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

I like to look at weather models, and they seem to agree that an Arctic outbreak will hit the eastern half of the country in the Jan. 8-12 time frame, but fortunately will only deal Texas a glancing blow. CFS predicts several blasts in January, but none of them look to be long-lived or nearly as sharp as the February 2021 blast.

We are getting thundersnow! I've never experienced that before. My phone started blasting an emergency alert for a "Snow Squall Warning" at around 3:30. The sky got super dark like a derecho was rolling in, heavy snow started falling very quickly, and now there have been multiple thunderclaps. Quite a bizarre experience. And the people across the way out back have a window open.

The National Weather Service said we might get up to an inch of snow during the day today.  Measuring on my deck, I have six inches of snow.  That was a whiff.  One of those days around Lake Tahoe.

Lows in the 20s and highs above freezing every day this week, but everyone is panicking nonetheless, even the Yankees who moved here last year.

The scene out back at 7:25 this morning. It's snowing heavily again now about an hour later. I like to take pictures of the "snow cake" on our deck table because they make for an easy comparison to pictures of past snowstorms.

Our cat sometimes likes to go outside and lie on the deck. This morning when I opened the door to take this picture, she backed away. (The people with the window open across the way slightly to the left are from Buffalo. They almost never close that window except when there is torrential rain. In houses with that floor plan, that window is the master bedroom, so I understand liking a nice cold room when you sleep. But I'd use an insulated window vent to let in the fresh air without the wind.)

We got a couple of inches of snow this morning, and now it's started again (7:45 pm).  It's not heavy yet, and I don't know how much more we'll get.  I expect I'll go into work at ten (instead of eight) tomorrow.

I took today off anyway to take my wife to a doctor's appointment.  Thanks to my union contract, I won't be charged a vacation day.

Assuming you mean Buffalo, NY, they're enjoying a small taste of home, I'm sure.  :)

Outdoor tables are also good for measuring the snow totals, if you care to do so.

Proof that apps aren't all that and a bag of chips.

My weather says a 2-day total of more than 10" of snow, but the temps those days will be right around the freezing mark and above freezing during the day. So basically an inch of cold rain with some flakes that won't stick on the roads.

After an unusually warm November and December, we finally have some cold weather here in Houston. It's currently 1 degree. Well. Celcius. Hah. It's 33 degrees. We have brought out and turned on our heaters for the first time this winter. Hope it stays cold for a few weeks. I love this weather.

Heh try having a dog that has any percentage of husky in him. My husky mix has to be practically dragged inside when it dips below 55 lol.

Been quite a depressing winter so far. Lot of bare ground with more freezing drizzle then actual snow, or when we do get snow it melts within 48 hrs.

We do get a good shot of snow tomorrow night and again Sunday so maybe it'll actually look like winter.
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!

I figured that saying "Buffalo" without clarification is presumed to mean the one in New York and not, for example, the ones in Florida, Lincolnshire, or Ukraine—much as saying "Denver" does not usually call to mind the one in Pennsylvania.

True, but then I would have had to clear a path to the table or tromp through the snow, neither of which I wanted to bother doing!

My brother lives in New Orleans. He was grousing about temperatures in the 30s and windchills in the 20s. I wasn't particularly sympathetic (the windchill here was showing as 6° when I woke up this morning), but then he said his house is poorly insulated and does not have heat. I might be a little more sympathetic to that, although I can't help but think he should have considered that when deciding where to rent. A colleague who grew up in Louisiana said many older houses lack heat and recalled a time when he was in law school and the water in his toilet froze.
