Quote from: algorerhythms on February 14, 2025, 07:38:00 AMFWIW, the Apple Weather app yesterday said the snowfall in Kitchener was 31 cm. I don't know which is more accurate. The same app is predicting 10 cm on Saturday and 25-30 cm on Sunday...

Update: I'm losing trust in the AccuWeather Past 24 Hour Snowfall Map, since it hasn't been accurate at all the past few days.

My workplace got about 4 inches yesterday morning and it only showed up as the lightest shade, representing an inch or less of snowfall. Then today it snowed on and off all day adding a fluffy couple of inches and that has barely registered on the snowfall map either. The map has been pretty good for the large area-wide storms, but measuring lake effect and lake enhanced snow bands is clearly a different beast.

It's still a fun tool to use, especially to see the spread of snowfall over time, but definitely take the snow totals with a grain of salt (that is if you can find any). :)

It's 22℉ this morning, with a forecast high of 35℉. I'm looking forward to Sunday morning when 37℉ will be the forecast low, not high.

QuoteThe joys of Great Lakes weather in February: Currently on day seven of consecutive days with measurable snowfall, and within the past week we have experienced both 35 degrees with snow (twice!) and 29 degrees with rain.

Friday 1/31: afternoon rain switched to moderate snow, about 1 inch
Saturday 2/01: morning and early afternoon snow showers
Sunday 2/02: quick moving afternoon storm brings another inch of snow
Monday 2/03: rain most of the day switching to sloppy snow in the evening
Tuesday 2/04: snow showers almost all day
Wednesday 2/05: a morning snow squall adding another inch and afternoon flurries
Thursday 2/06: about 2 inches of early morning snow followed by a coating of ice

Week 2:

Friday 2/07: morning snow showers, windy with more snow showers after noon
Saturday 2/08: cloudy, heavy snow developing in the evening, about 3-4 inches area wide
Sunday 2/09: occasional snow showers and flurries
Monday 2/10: a coating of snow overnight, afternoon sun
Tuesday 2/11: partly sunny with no snowfall!
Wednesday 2/12: afternoon and evening snow totaling 2-3 inches
Thursday 2/13: morning rain showers switching to light snow and flurries in the afternoon
Friday 2/14: a coating of snow in the early morning

A bizarre three-part storm this weekend added about 6 inches to our snow totals.

First was a shield of snow moving in ahead of the storm on Saturday. We got about 2 inches of snow between noon and 6PM Saturday. Then in the early hours of Sunday, light snow switched to steady freezing rain as cold air battled warm, leading to a thick coating of ice (probably the most significant "ice storm" I have experienced personally that I can remember). That ended around mid morning. Then around noon, heavy snow moved in, adding a quick inch or so, and intermittent light to moderate snow continued through the afternoon and evening.

The Rochester area ended up being the pivot point for this storm, as areas north and west got heavy snow, while areas south and east got mostly rain (at least until the later parts of the storm), leading to a sharp gradation in snow totals.

And of course, this storm moving through set off the lake effect snow machine which is expected to continue through midweek, with heavy snow continuing to pile up this morning (with the heaviest snow north of the city) amidst a high wind warning.

Monday 02/17: Morning snow showers
Tuesday 02/18: a few flurries, but some breaks of sun and no measurable snow!
Wednesday 02/19: Heavy lake effect snow all morning, about 3-4 inches
Thursday 02/20: snow showers and squalls all day, adding an inch or two
Friday 02/21: a coating of snow overnight and currently amidst another snow squall

Currently -7C (19F) and overcast.

Here's a photo showing our snowbanks as of Monday, which are above the car roof. I can't remember a winter this snowy in many years, we haven't seen rain since late December!

You probably don't realize, but that statement clearly identifies you as living in somewhere with more precipitation than, say, Kansas.  Around here, a year where then there's no rain between late December and mid-February is... well, kind of normal.  We only had rain one day in January this year, same last year.  If I'm looking at the calendar right, we didn't have rain between 02-NOV-2021 and 17-FEB-2022.

Well, that's obviously true because of the Great Lakes, but the reason it's surprising not to have any rain is much more about low temperatures than it is about lack of precipitation.

Typically, the Great Lakes region gets a mix of precipitation types in the winter months. This year, it's been almost all snow. In particular, Upstate NY, Southern ON, and Michigan haven't had a proper thaw since New Years Day. It's very unusual for us to have near or below freezing temperatures for that long and the perpetual cold + snow has led to some of the deepest snow cover I can remember.

74 and sunny today in coastal Southern California. Highs will hover between the high 60s and the mid 80s over the next week or so around Los Angeles.

We almost hit 50 degrees yesterday for the first time this year. Evening temps were in the upper 40's with clear skies, making it easily the most pleasant evening of the year so far.

As for today, 40's with rain. Still plenty of snow cover, but it's melting.

We usually start to warm up the last week of February no matter how rough the winter has been, and woof, that was a rough one! Only one big snow, but lots of Arctic Blasts™.

This week, we might get our first severe weather event on Tuesday morning, but otherwise the next 10 days are mostly 60s and 70s with a couple of 57º days next week.

As far as I'm concerned, spring is here, but DFW has had traces of snow as late as April 13, so never say never.

Because level 1 crosses the northwest corner of the county I live in, no doubt my SAME radio will be going off multiple times this evening even though I practically live on the mid-southern county line about 30 miles away.

Well, we're (locally) in our first tornado watch of the storm season. Late night threat too. I'm a bit more concerned about widespread straight line winds up to 80mph and large hail since that seems more likely. The tornado threat is there though. Currently there is a couple tornado warnings in effect off to the Northwest on the leading edge of the squall line.

We had a Wind Advisory, a Tornado Watch, and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning this morning.

Also, a Tornado Warning was issued in the western DFW area.

The Metroplex definitely looks like it suffered more damage than what we got up here 200 miles Northwest.

We got absolutely no snow here last night (despite being forecasted for some), but 50 miles away had blizzard conditions.

I'm scheduled to fly Fort Lauderdale-DFW-Reno tomorrow (Wed. 3/5).  Got a notification from American Airlines that anyone flying through DFW today or tomorrow could change flights at no charge.  I looked at the options, didn't see anything that made more sense than what I already have scheduled, so I'll stick to plan.  The weather at DFW does look much better tomorrow.

Had I taken those same flights today:  the FLL-DFW flight left FLL an hour late, was diverted to Amarillo, spent a couple hours on the ground there and arrives at DFW almost five hours late.  Which would not have mattered, because tonight's DFW-RNO flight was cancelled altogether.

It was about 70F today in Fresno.  I started the day out with a fever but went for a run around noon once it subsided.  I don't get to run perfect daytime weather all that often and it was worth the effort to try (ended up going 8.6 miles).

Yeah, we had some nasty high winds yesterday combined with a "haboob" consisting of the West Texas dust.
I am aware of three roof shingles landing in my driveway, and I was waiting for the sun to dry them up before I collect and trash them. A Wind Advistory has been issued for today.

It's snowing outside -- in the Texas Panhandle that is; places north of Amarillo are seeing overnight lows dropping to around 20 degrees.  Meanwhile here in South Texas, spring-like conditions -- our afternoon temperatures be topping out in the low-to-mid 90s.

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:      92 high; 73 low                  79 high; 61 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:  91 high; 72 low                  77 high; 60 low
LAREDO:                95 high; 70 low                  82 high; 57 low
MCALLEN:              94 high; 74 low                  81 high; 61 low

With dew points topping around 60 degrees, the heat index will hover right around the actual air temperature so the heat index everywhere will stay short of triple-digits.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"
