I have about 10 inches of fresh snow out on the deck; it started falling sometime overnight and is still coming down.  We get spring snowstorms as late as Memorial Day weekend here, but by late April we're usually looking at 2 to 4 inches or so rather than 10.

I'm on the other side of the Sierra Nevada and it has been a steady rain most of the morning.  I'm really glad I went out yesterday to drive some dirt roads instead of tomorrow.  Cooperstown Road already had some washouts that were questionable to get past in a car.

Currently 25C (76F) with a thunderstorm expected to start any minute. Environment Canada says the storm is "capable of producing very strong wind gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph) and up to nickel size hail".

Yep, very similar here, except that we didn't end up seeing any hail, just a quick burst of rain with some thunder. Apparently areas south of the Thruway had more of a proper storm, but I haven't confirmed.

More of the same conditions we've been seeing most of this month -- temperatures remaining slightly above normal  for end of April....some places only a couple degrees above normal, while others are several degrees above.

Here is what we're looking at for the last day of April:

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:      91 high; 77 low                89 high; 71 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:  92 high; 76 low                87 high; 71 low
LAREDO:                99 high; 76 low                94 high; 68 low
MCALLEN:              96 high; 77 low                91 high; 71 low

Still very breezy all over South Texas with winds generally around 25-30 MPH with gusts approaching 40 MPH and bringing in loads of gulf moisture, so expect some moderate humidity.  Dew Points still in the 70s for most of the area, which means:

NIGHTTTIME HEAT INDEX:  As much as 90 degrees in some locations around the midnight hours
DAYTIME HEAT INDEX:  100 to 110 degrees
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

Today's official high temperature at the South Lake Tahoe airport (KTVL, elevation 6257 feet) was 75°F.  That ties the record high for May 9, and was also the first time in 2025 that the official high temperature has reached at least 70°F.

The final 70°F high temperature in 2024 came on October 25, so this year's streak of consecutive days of temperatures never reaching 70°F was 195 days.

Something I tell people about Tahoe winters is "yes, it snows, sometimes a lot, but we never get bitter cold such as they get in the Upper Midwest".  Here's the distribution of high temperatures over those 195 days:

Below 30°F:  1 day (26°F on January 26)
30°F-39°F:  41 days
40°F-49°F:  76 days
50°F-59°F:  54 days
60°F-69°F:  23 days

So even in the coldest months, almost every day there are about 3 to 4 hours when you can get outside and do some outdoor activity in relatively pleasant temperature.  (Sometimes it's unpleasantly windy though.)

Day 3 of sunny weather, currently it's 27C (80F). The rest of the week looks drizzly, but still comfortable highs in the low 20's. This coming weekend is the Victoria Day long weekend, the unofficial start of summer, but it looks like it could be a bit cooler and less sunny than last weekend.

Chicago had its first Dust Storm Warning ever for the city core on Friday and was the first time it recorded a dust storm since May 10, 1934 (the original Dust Bowl).

Twice in the last 3 years I've been under a dust storm warning in SW suburban Cook Co.
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!
