Quote from: michiganguy123 on April 09, 2025, 11:02:56 PMDog N Suds used to have 650 restaurants in 38 states and is now down to only 12 total restaurants. With only 2 operating left in Michigan 1 in my hometown of Montague, and one by Norton Shores that just opened back up for the first time in many years.

The only one I know of in Ohio that is still going is between Lotain and Elyria.

I didn't even know they had four in Massachusetts, but will now have two.

Retail Archeology on Youtube did a great video about the Mesa AZ location and how absurdly dead it is on a Saturday, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V19HDcSjYo0

The one in Peabody MA is always busy as hell when I've been to it. Oddly that AZ location in the video is staying open despite it being a ghost town.

Huh.  I've been to an At Home store precisely one time, here in Wichita, six months ago.  It was about the only place we could find any selection of twin-size bedding, for one of our sons' Christmas present.

Bedding is in short supply in Kansas...

Oh, no, there are plenty of stores with plenty of bedding for sale.  It's just that it's almost impossible to find twin-size bedding sets that aren't juvenile-looking.  We found that, if you find a store that sells any, then it's likely to be kind of expensive, and you're almost guaranteed no real selection to choose from.  At Home was the only store we could find that had multiple sets to choose from, and they were reasonably priced too.

My wife and I used to go to the locations around here on a fairly regular basis (since back when the store was called Garden Ridge) and they were always really dead.

We went a couple of times to our local one, but their selection just seemed like weird odds and ends.  Haven't been back in a few years.

The At Home here in Huntsville opened-up in a former K-mart along the Parkway on the north side of the city back in the mid-2010s, in one of the poorer areas of the city. Whenever I've been by, it ain't ever looked too busy either, though I don't think the giant parking lot they inherited from the K-mart there's ever helped much either.

It would indeed suck to be an older kid and be stuck with Paw Patrol sheets.

Nearly every year, one of our kids winds up with a "practical" gift for birthdays/Xmas along with their more desirable gifts as well.

It helps that they're hitting the saturation point of gift giving and sometimes don't know what they want anymore.

It's alright, I gritted my teeth at writing a few thank you cards over the years (Oh, you donated money in my name? Gee, thanks for the school supplies! Ooh, clothing that doesn't fit...)

I wouldn't mind the first item nowadays, but 10-year-old me was just suspicious.

When we asked for gift ideas, he specifically asked for bedding.

I actually don't remember if it was for Christmas or his birthday.  That's because his birthday is the 11th day of Christmas, so we always end up shopping for and wrapping both sets of presents at the same time.

Every year, we open one big box on Christmas Eve, and it's full of various things:  a movie, candy and other snacks to watch with the movie, new pajamas, new socks, and new underwear.  Obviously, the latter three are 'practical' gifts.  But it's the only time of the year they get new ones, so they do indeed look forward to them.

Good on you for getting him separate presents for both. Two of my friends have birthdays within a week of Christmas Day (one on the 21st and one on the 29th), and family members treating them as a combined occasion bothers both of them (not because of the loss of the material goods per se, but rather the fact that most people get to experience two gift-giving days, one "universal" one and one personal one, and it sucks to be left out of one).

It's still weird though, because we save one big present for Epiphany and do a big family holiday meal that evening as well.  That's two days after his birthday.

And also . . .
