Quote from: Max Rockatansky on July 14, 2025, 04:15:20 PMIt was 71F when I got out the door at 4:50 AM this morning.  Despite my best efforts in drinking 12 ounces of extra water before my run (13.1 miles today) and another 20 ounces during I still got dehydrated.  I was down about four pounds of water weight when I got home and felt dizzy for about another two hours afterwards.  Presently I'm at 210 ounces of water consumed for the day.  I'm not sure what lesson I can take away from this other than maybe try 64 ounces of water before heading out the door instead of 52 or my normal 40?

So as you might know, I'm climbing Kilimanjaro here in a couple of weeks. I had been doing a ton of running leading up to when I was supposed originally leave for Africa, but then I managed to get pneumonia a week before I left so I had to postpone. So I wasn't able to run for about 3 weeks and then just recently have been able to get back to it. Unfortunately, now it's been quite a bit warmer trying to get back up to speed as opposed to when I was running in April and May.

I tried to run a 10k about two weeks ago and couldn't quite make it running all the way, but it was 74° and that's way too hot for me to run unfortunately. This morning I tried again, and managed to finish only 3 minutes slower than I had been pre-pneumonia. Then I looked at the temp and it was only 62°, so much better for me.

I wish I were running at the pace that you were running and could keep my BPM in the same range as you, but I definitely don't come by endurance running naturally. I've definitely increased my endurance, sped up some, and lowered my heartrate by about 10 BPM over the past three weeks though.

I've been distance running since I was 18 years old.  The reason I started at all was so I could pass the five mile running course at the AZ POST Academy.  The pace I needed to pull it off with some room for error was 7.5 MPH.  I started daily training at that pace and distance on a treadmill.  It took about six months for me to be able to sustain that speed for 5 miles reliably.

Once I had the pace down I started running outdoors.  My distance went up a lot in my 20s and I would occasionally do local Half Marathon or Full Marathon races.  I started regularly running Half Marathons once a week back in 2014.  I keep up with it because of the health benefits but it also makes other activities like hiking or distance cycling way easier.  More than anything though, I actually enjoy running and physical activity.  I find such activities to often be the most relaxing part of my day.

I don't love running, but I certainly don't hate it. When I started my training for my climb back in March, I could barely run 2 miles @ 6 mph. My body would feel it quite a bit afterward and my heart rate averaged around 173 for almost the whole run. This morning, I ran 6.3 miles @ 6.5 mph and my average heart rate was 158 bpm. I could have kept running honestly but needed to log on for work.

The longest I had ever run prior to doing the training this year was a 5k.

Again, I don't love running, but I very much enjoy feeling strong when I climb mountains out here which is the main goal.

I way more enjoy cycling than running. To me, its more the pounding my body takes when I am running more than anything else. On a bike I can get a really good cardio exercise going for a much longer period of time than when I run.

Why did I wake up at 3 in the morning, and then fall asleep again from 9 am to 12 am?

The trouble I have with cycling as my daily cardio mostly is that I can just get out and get out the door to partake in it.  Gear is required and my bike does occasionally need maintenance just as any vehicle would.  I like to run before sunrise mostly.  On a bike that generally a great idea given you're on a road with cars.

I've broken a couple bones and had a couple other foot/let injuries over the years.  I tried substituting cycling for one round of recovery but found it took 3.5 miles to burn the equivalent energy compared to 1 mile running.  I found that rowing actually comes fairly close to the same amount of caloric energy burned in an hour as running.  To that end I do have rowing machine in my room that mostly gets broken out when I'm injured.

Long ago, when people did a lot of manual labor, it used to be common to go to bed pretty much right when it got dark, then wake up for a few hours (which is when you'd have your leisure time), then go back to bed.

Technically, I suppose, for that infinitesimal amount of time when the clock first strikes 12:00, it is between AM and PM.  It's like that point when your microwave oven hits 0:00 and you should be able to open the door with no beeping but the display still changes to show the clock.  (I grew up with a microwave on which you could actually do that.  My parents still have it, and it still works.)

Quote from: Max Rockatansky on July 14, 2025, 09:30:37 PMI neglected to mention that I didn't eat before starting this morning.
Quote from: kphoger on July 15, 2025, 12:03:03 PMCrap, yeah, do mention that!  I was going to suggest drinking more water, but I'm someone who drinks less water than most when doing physical work in the heat, and I didn't have a good way of telling if the amount you drank was enough.  But no food?  I definitely would have recommended eating something.  Or even just some Gatorade powder to mix into your water halfway through the run or something.

I really need to stop calling kettles 'black'.

Today, I had my usual breakfast, which is small:  just a bowl of granola and a tiny bit of grapefruit juice.  For lunch, I ate less than usual, because I'm trying to stretch leftovers to three days instead of two.  I got home, drank a third of a glass of water, did not eat a snack, and then proceeded to mow the lawn in the 95°F afternoon sun.  I had to drink more water halfway though, and then I could barely stand up to cook dinner afterward.  When our youngest son asked when dinner was going to be, I snapped at him because I was so exhausted.

I had a full glass of water before dinner, then a full glass of apple juice with the meal.  We just went for a walk as a family, and I could tell that I was still a little dehydrated.  This whiskey sour that I'm about to finish makes me feel a lot better, but it still probably doesn't give me all the hydration I need.  Oh well.

I am lucky in that at the end of my block I can access a bike trail that connects to others all over the area. I rarely have to be on a street.

I only bike about once a week though. My go to is usually strength and interval training during the week. The bike cardio definitely helps with that.

A thread on r/Albany prompted me to look up what body lice look like and it occurred to me that many photos of "bed bugs", especially in hotel reviews, might actually be body lice.  Makes me wonder how many of those "bed bug" reports are actually bed bugs.  Not that I want either, so this likely won't change my policies regarding booking hotels.

I wonder how many reports of bed bugs are completely fabricated just because someone was unhappy with their stay.

This, more likely.

And many reports of bed bugs are actually just bugs. Not what you want to find in a room, but if someone sees bugs, they're probably not bedbugs, which are miniscule and generally tucked into the sheets.

Yep.  Same here.  Although, when I was working in a Minnesota law firm, we did have a case against Best Western for a bat bug (not bed bug) infestation...Nasty tens of bites on the plaintiff (maybe 100?).

That's like...ten tens.

Weird that we use dozens of ____, but you don't hear grosses of ____, we just use "hundreds".

I've stayed at over 500 different hotels and have never encountered/felt bed bugs, though almost all of my stays have been chain hotels. All my time in this job, I've heard of exactly one co-worker who supposedly had a bed bug encounter...but also seemed to be on the lazy side, prevaricated a bit, and eventually got in some trouble for annoying other co-workers.
