Annoyingly, the only information I could find from KDOT regarding the I-35/Gardner Road interchange project is from this hour-long presentation they gave to the city of Gardner in early 2021. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4U68UM3Y48

It shows an "interim" bridge project and an "ultimate" solution for the interchange. The interim bridge would essentially be one of the two bridges needed for an eventual DDI. The original budget from 2021, in FY 2024 dollars, was $17.2 million, so I don't know if the awarded bid at $26.2 million includes additional work or is just that bad of an inflationary increase from the original budget.

I sent an email to the Public Involvement Specialist (who came up with that title?) on the I-35/US 56 project asking about the Gardner Road project and will post if I get a response.

UPDATE: I got a reply this morning:

"Thank you for your inquiry about the I-35 and Gardner Road project. A project webpage will be drafted and posted soon. We will follow up with an email with the link once the webpage goes live."

No project webpage yet, but KDOT put out a news release stating construction will begin Monday:

QuoteI-35/Gardner Road project will start Monday in Johnson County

Post Date: 09/05/2025 1:13 PM

A Kansas Department of Transportation bridge replacement project at I-35/Gardner Road is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 8, in Gardner, conditions permitting.

The project is scheduled to be constructed in phases and is expected to be completed in November 2027. Project work includes replacement of the Gardner Road bridge over I-35, with turn lanes, shoulders, lighting improvements and pedestrian facilities, an additional lane on the southbound I-35 to Gardner Road exit ramp, pavement improvements and realignment of 191st Street east of Gardner Road.

Work will be regularly scheduled Monday through Friday, with Saturdays, as needed, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and lane restrictions on weekdays will be limited to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Winter shutdown periods are scheduled from December 2025 – March 2026 and December 2026 – March 2027.

During phase one of the project, Sept. 9 through December 2025, Gardner Road, I-35/Gardner Road interchange ramps and 191st Street at Gardner Road are expected to remain open to traffic.

Northbound and southbound I-35 at Gardner Road will be reduced to one lane intermittently for the installation of temporary concrete safety barriers. Daily short-term single lane and shoulder closures will be scheduled.

Gardner Road will be reduced to one lane with a flagging operation for construction of temporary widening pavement, temporary connections at relocated 191st Street and placement of temporary concrete safety barriers. 191st Street will also be reduced to one lane with a flagging operation during this time with limited closures to through traffic for utility relocation and reconnection to the realigned 191st Street.

Traffic during phase one of the project will be controlled using lane closures, changeable message boards, signs, traffic cones and barricades.

Message boards have been placed in the area to alert motorists of upcoming work. Dondlinger & Sons Construction Company, Inc., based in Wichita, is the contractor for the $26.2 million project.
