It is a good thing that they weren't around for the summers of 1870 and 1871.  Those two summers, leading up to the great upper Great Lakes firestorms of 1871-10-08 (both in Chicago and especially Peshtigo, WI), were exceptionally HOT and DRY.  BUT they were completely normal weather.

I'm tired of people putting forward thinly veiled denials of long-term climate change by bringing stuff like this up.

I know mgk920 doesn't believe in climate change, but the point (confusing short-term with long-term) is somewhat valid. "The temperature never got below 0° here all winter, even overnight" is at least somewhat medium-term, while "it's 4° and really windy right now" is short-term and not evidence of anything.

Similarly, a specific category-5 hurricane is not evidence of climate change, but looking at how many per year there have been over the last ten years is.

I agree that the point, with no context, is valid.  However, in this case, the context was screaming.

Quote from: SEWIGuy on August 25, 2025, 04:01:04 PMIn Wisconsin in elementary school, we would also get a milk break in the morning. I didn't know until just a few years ago that this was very much a Wisconsin thing.
My high school had introduced a 20 minute breakfast break when I was a sophomore. Kids could use their lunch dollars to buy individual cereal packets, granola, milk, fruit, and string cheese during the break. It felt a little unnecessary since it was just after the first hour of school, but I'm sure some appreciated having a little extra time to sleep in the morning and still have a good breakfast.

Minor thing that bothers me: the text editor will occasionally mess up a quote's placement to cause that.

It bothers me when I'm trying to use the quote feature and I have to zoom in extremely close as my phone allows so it'll open up the paste feature on my phone.

I guess "no politics" really does exclusively mean "no politics if you're SPUI."

My favorite is when the editor adds "[url]" to a URL but if you accidentally used a syntax typo before that URL, you're going to spend 15 minutes finding that extra [/...] tag somewhere in the mix or sandwiched in the quotes.

In that case, Inshould just delete the post and start over, but no; I have to stubbornly attempt to half-ass fix my mistakes.

Finally a mod post, but why isn't it purple-texting the post where all of the following are true?
  • Is an unsolicited opinion on a matter that is 100% political and 0% related to roads.
  • Came from a user who has a history of posting election denial and anti-immigrant horseshit.

This is Off-Topic. By definition it's 0% related to roads.

Also, looks like something upthread got deleted between yesterday and today.

Ok, I guess I'm starting to understand a bit more.

Useless, stupid disinformation related to climate data: totally fine unless you are mentioning a specific political party.

Dangerous disinformation about an election which directly resulted in a coup attempt: not fine, but not bad enough to warrant actual reprimand.

Racism: an actual grey area where you can complain about how much Nicaraguans litter with little relevance to the actual conversation, but you can't advocate for ethnic cleansing. You also cannot call somebody a racist if they do racist things.

Unfortunately, I can't ban someone for being useless or stupid.

In most cases, you will not know if someone has been personally reprimanded in a way that has consequences attached unless the user in question says so publicly.

Can it as the forum rules are written?  P13 and Crash_It didn't get the axe for being stupid but rather when they crossed the line into other greater offenses.

Molandfreak

If it makes any difference, I'm not asking for anyone to be banned, just for moderation to be more effective about contentious issues and a little more transparency about what actually constitutes political posts that aren't allowed. And I didn't call anyone stupid or useless, just specific information within a specific post.
