John Madden, helicopter grappling hooks, Arctic Island Gulags and Flat Illinois are never old news.

Would a companion meme be something like...

The zipper merge in Canada

— You first.
— No, you go ahead.
— I'm in no hurry.  Please.
— Oh, no, I insist.
— Well, if you insist...

This also applies to the Midwest. And not just for zipper merges; I've seen people get stuck at a four-way stop because nobody wants to go first.

I live in the Midwest, and I love those times.  Three people sitting at a four-way stop, trying to decide who is going to go first.  I roll up, assess the situation, and then just go.  I see no need to wait for them.

My name is pretty rare, but my grandfather came over from Germany.  It's possible that our surname used to have an umlaut over the o.  There are multiple theories about the name's origin;  one theory suggests that it's related to the word ogre.
