Furthest away signage on either a BGS or mileage sign for cities

I think I'm understanding the intent of the thread?

-Sacramento starts to be signed on pull-thru BGSs on I-5 in Downtown Los Angeles (384 miles)

-Los Angeles starts to be signed on US-101 in Mountain View (about 10 miles north of San Jose) (352 miles via I-5, or 386 miles via US-101)

-On I-80 eastbound approaching the MacArthur Maze in Oakland there is a sign directing Los Angeles traffic to I-580 (375 miles)

I am pretty sure Portland was listed on a mileage sign on I-5 just north of Stockton, which would be about 620 miles, but I haven't driven that stretch in a while.

I-40 BGSs in Flagstaff are 465 miles away from LA.

Furthest I see Tulsa signed in the St Louis area is on I-255 SB at the I-64 interchange. 402 miles away.

Is St Louis signed anywhere in Tulsa?

The difference is these don't have to be continously signed, just on at least one non novelty distance or green sign.

I'm pretty sure it's always Joplin and/or Claremore in Tulsa. Other than St. Louis, Tulsa is also signed all the way down in Antlers, OK at 139 miles away, but that's not that impressive.

Houston is signed all the way at the I-30/I-49 interchange in Texarkana, Arkansas, which is 296 miles away.

Those have anything I've seen Beat. But AFAIK the furthest one in the USA is the control city for I-80 West at Salt Lake City is "Reno" which is over 500 miles away.

Reno does sometimes reciprocate, but sometimes they use Elko which isn't as good.

I think the mileage sign on I-80 outside of SLC for San Francisco 781 miles is still around...

I-15 is signed for Salt Lake City heading north out of Baker, at 510 miles. That's novel for California, signing a major city three states away rather than signing some random Podunk instate city like South Primm

Elko was founded specifically because Reno and Salt Lake are too far apart, and the railroad needed a place to do pit stops between the two. And it continued to grow exactly because lots of other kinds of infrastructure need a node of some kind between Reno and Salt Lake—major power lines interconnect there, there's a big telecommunications network facility, and all kinds of other things up there.

So in a way Elko might be the best control city, because it basically exists to be a control city.

South Primm got a laugh out of me.

But the closest town to there in CA that actually exists is Nipton. Which if you read the Wikipedia article for Nipton, it becomes kinda clear why even Caltrans wouldn't bother signing that one.

It is pretty silly that all the of the roads leading to Cajon Pass are all like "Barstow :D" like anyone is actually intending to head there as anything other than a pit stop.

This doesn't look very "novel" to me: https://maps.app.goo.gl/BSbZ9qaMq7L3t5Xm9
I think they are considered "novelty" because they are showing locations and distances that are not likely relevant to most people on that route. I think it's a safe bet most people who drive US-50 in California aren't going to drive all the way to its eastern terminus. So showing something considerably closer would be more useful. The sign is more about showing "wow, this is a long route!" and thus the novelty.

It also seems to be a US route thing. I don't recall I-10 signage in Santa Monica showing the distance to Jacksonville, Florida.
I believe I-40 has it or used to. There is are two signs on I-75 and I-70 which border in novelty but I think they are.

Our interstate highway network is unified system that features limited access high speed travel without stopping. When a local enters on this highway system and happens to be a one end of one of the several transcontinental routes, he still gets a sense of where he locally at the sight of a control city 2,000 miles away. Day to day we don't know if the vehicle next to you is using the interstate network for a few miles or if is destination is at the end of this highway.

Nothing novelty about it, it is all used by the 48 contiguous states that are a single nation.

I was looking for Denver signage and found one 560 miles away in Lawrence. That's the furthest I could find for Denver, unless there's one that I'm missing way south on I-15 Utah

Good call. I had missed this one. Only had found the one on I-470 in Topeka.
