I'm not inviting strangers to my home when the trash can is waiting conveniently in my backyard.  Not having to deal with another human at the recycling center/scrap yard offsets the nominal amount of money I might otherwise obtain.

When was the last time you saw a CRT anywhere in the wild other than on the curb on trash day?

Today, actually. If it ain't broke, don't throw it—come up with a new use for it. Vintage gaming isn't the most expensive hobby in the world.

My wife and I only sleep in an extra hour or so.  We've finished the grocery shopping and the boys have done their house cleaning chores by lunchtime on Saturday.

But anyway, there's a huge* difference between "sleeping in" and "not up and ready to go until 1-2 at the earliest".
I'd respond, but I'm lying in bed right now...

Quote from: vdeane on Today at 12:37:50 PMThe fact that recycling old electronics, especially computer monitors, is so impractical.

Recycle? Why bother with that? If you can't sell them for cash, and if you want rid of them, just throw them in the garbage.
Mmm, lead and mercury in my drinking water. :-P

Stay tuned to California related topics.  I might make a run at New Idria Road on Saturday and that mine has all kinds of Mercury runoff.

I once tried to sell my entire collection of vintage games as a $200 bundle.  I had no takers or even offers.  Basically it is just trash that gets shoved into the closet corner in the guest bedroom.  One or twice a year I might play an NES or SNES game.

Last time I went down to the basement.

Really, the only reason it isn't plugged in anymore is that we finally no longer have a working PC with a DVI or VGA port.  They're all either all-in-one computers or laptops now.  Also, the only reason we don't still use our old mechanical keyboard is that we no longer have a working PC with a PS/2 port.

Quote from: vdeane on Today at 12:37:50 PMUnfortunately, many places are only open during business hours, or if they have Saturday hours, it's only Saturday morning, which doesn't help since I'm not up and ready to go until 1-2 at the earliest on a normal Saturday.

This does not sound like a "them problem".
Who gets up early on a Saturday, though?

Depends on how you define "early." I get up at 7:00 on weekdays. On weekends, I don't set an alarm, and the thermostat is programmed to hold the "sleep" setting until 8:30 to make sleeping in more practical, but I still almost never manage to sleep past 8:00 at the latest. Either I just wake up naturally on my own (especially during the summer when it gets light earlier) or "nature calls" and I then know I won't be able to fall back to sleep. Plus the cat hears me in the bathroom, comes up to the bedroom door, and starts meowing to be fed.

I've been retired for 3 years now, and I still get up between 5:00 and 6:00 most mornings, weekdays and weekends. Once in a while I'll make it past 6:30 but that's about all.

Something new. I have my phone sync'd to my car's display, and Google Maps comes up automatically. Just in case I happen to need it. Anyway, I drive a few minutes, and the search box comes up with "Home". Really Google? I just left home, and now I can't figure out how to get back there?

I'm pretty sure the target market for that is Mrs 1995hoo (if that is her real name).

Our local Goodwill has started taking e-waste (they have bins for "working electronics" and "non-working electronics") - since it's Goodwill, I don't have 100% confidence it won't just end up landfill anyway, but it's super-convenient for us and does give me more confidence it will be handled correctly than just leaving it on the curb.

Amusingly the last time we used Goodwill was on a weekend.  My wife couldn't get herself organized enough to get over to them before their 1 PM weekend donation drop off window.  I could have gotten over way earlier but she didn't tell me there was a need until it was too late.
