Very quiet Santa Ana wind season here in Los Angeles. And the first winter-type rain storm on its way next week, dipping temps into the 60s? That's VERY early.

We did get our really bad wildfires in early January this past year though (80F weather right after New Years), so our summer-type temps are still inevitable.

Roadgeekteen

It's 59 degrees and sunny today, but the Long Weekend's weather isn't looking so good.

The first big winter storm is expected to hit the central Sierra this Monday through Wednesday.  The higher parts from Carson Pass down through Yosemite could see as much as 3 feet of snow.

The higher passes including Ebbetts, Sonora and the Tioga Road through Yosemite will certainly close for the storm, and the question then becomes whether Caltrans gets them reopened, or possibly just leaves them closed until declaring them fully closed for the winter, which usually happens in early to mid November.  Summer hikers and campers are gone; most of the recreationists up there at this time of year are hunters, and they will head for lower elevations.

The weather is turning cold and wet early this year.  I wasn't looking forward to running in that 1-inch rain overnight Monday through Tuesday morning.  That being the case, I went out and knocked it out today.  At least I won't be on work travel during this storm.  One of the last big ones got me stranded due to flood out in Monterey in 2023.

50s and very rainy today. A storm is coming through.

October 14 gets our first snow of the season.  I have about 2 inches in the last 3 hours and it's still coming down.  At my elevation it will melt in the next couple days, but the stuff that's falling at our highest elevations tonight will still be there next July.

High of around 60 degrees and cloudy.

More of the same conditions as we've seen since the end of summer with temperatures remaining consistent.  We are several degrees above average for mid-October (generally +5 to +8 departure from normal) as listed below.

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:        95 high; 77 low                89 high; 71 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:    94 high; 78 low                87 high; 72 low
LAREDO:                  97 high; 72 low                90 high; 67 low
MCALLEN:              100 high; 76 low                91 high; 70 low

Even parts as north as Bexar County (which San Antonio is seated in) could be approaching triple-digits tomorrow afternoon.

The one good thing is that our humidity that everyone keeps pointing out has dropped a lot since the start of fall, as expected.  Dew Point are south of 70 degrees for the vast majority of South Texas (only parts of Cameron county will stay above 70 degrees), which means the afternoon Heat Index will only be a few degrees above the actual air temperature itself.  The highest Heat Index, topping out only at around 105 degrees, is around the McAllen area.  The days of 110+ Heat Index are most likely behind us....at least until next Spring.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"
