Quote from: kphoger on February 03, 2026, 01:21:43 PMI don't know if this is a popular or unpopular opinion on here, but I think every route should be signed everywhere—no omitted shields for any reason.  If a particular route doesn't need to be signed, then it doesn't need to be numbered there in the first place.  If it does deserve to be numbered, then it deserves to be signed.
Quote from: Rothman on February 03, 2026, 02:54:00 PMNot sure I'd want full NY shields out there for all NYSDOT reference routes...

Those don't count.  It's right there in the name:  reference.  Those only need to exist on paper (and little bitty signs for roadgeeks to geek over).

Quote from: Sani on February 03, 2026, 10:53:28 AMMaybe they were taking a cue from their colleagues a mile to the west and decided not to put non-Interstate routes on BGSes, although that wouldn't explain why U.S. 24 shows up in your first example.

US 40 also appears to be missing from several of the signs and assemblies.

I saw on Youtube some clips showing from bird's view the progress of the I-70/US-63 interchange construction.

MoDOT announced upcoming public meetings for the Rocheport to Columbia section and uploaded new plans and renderings to the website. Interestingly, the plans for the interchange with U.S. 63 differ from what is shown on the Columbia to Kingdom City page.

The Columbia to Kingdom City plans include improvements west to Paris Road: https://www.modot.org/sites/default/files/documents/I-70%20and%2063%20Projection_1.pdf

The Rocheport to Columbia plan shows most of the same improvements but modify the roundabout on Clark Lane and include direct connection ramps to/from U.S. 63: https://www.modot.org/sites/default/files/documents/I-70%20at%20US%20Route%2063%20_%20checked1.pdf

I guess these new ramps from/to US-63 northbound to I-70 westbound might be planned for a later phase when the funds will be available or when the traffic levels will reach the need for it. Interesting to note the addition of a ramp from I-70 westbound to US-63 southbound.

Looks it's all programmed. The original plan did not have these direct movements, but with the traffic between the two routes and continued growth of Columbia, especially South, it's very much needed! See also game days during football season. I wonder if there would be any talk of adding lanes at any point to US 63 South of I-70 to at least Grindstone Pkwy.

And don't forget some additionals interchanges and overpass to remove some remaining intersections on US-63 between I-70 and Jefferson City. I guess some people might dusting off the idea of converting it into I-570 but that would enter into fictional territory.

Btw, I found by luck that clip of showing the improvements of I-70 from Rocheport to Columbia.

The Booneville-Rocheport segment of I-70 had its groundbreaking ceremony, and I guess that construction is now underway on rebuilding and widening that segment to six lanes (three lanes in each direction)!

The parkway alternative seems to be a better alternative than the boulevard and a good compromise since it's grade-separated.

This goes well with the Reconnecting the Westside plans for I-35/I-670 on the southwest side of downtown. My favorite of those plans is to realign the highway and restore the street grid, although of course I recognize that would also be the most expensive plan. Most likely, the existing viaduct will be rehabbed and some small improvements made along the corridor, but it would be nice to be able to do something equivalent to Oklahoma City relocating I-40 through downtown.

The Ghostbuster

I think the Freeway Alternative is the only logical alternative. The Parkway Alternative would have narrow lanes and shoulders, would not meet Interstate Standards, and thus could not be an extension of Interstate 49. Of course, first they would have to get rid of that pesky court order preventing construction of a freeway or parkway alignment.

Yes, they're well aware that the consent decree needs to be addressed in order for anything to happen:

QuoteWhat is the 1985 Federal Consent Decree and what does it mean for US-71?

US-71 is unique among urban highways. It started like so many others, with nation-wide interstate highway planning and construction, 70 years ago but was delayed and significantly altered due to organized community resistance.

A compromise solution resulted from the 1985 Federal Consent Decree, whereby US-71 was to be built as "less than a highway and more than a parkway."

The highway was finally opened for operation in 2001, and in the 24 years since it opened, several of the stated benefits of the highway and compromise solution of the Federal Consent Decree have failed to materialize. In addition, new traffic safety issues and barriers to mobility for neighborhoods on the east side of Kansas City, Missouri, have arisen. The decree requires the retention of three signalized, at-grade crossings and imposes specific legal guidelines for any substantial reconfiguration of the US-71 corridor.

Addressing or resolving the decree is a key focus of Phase 2 of the Reconnecting the East Side project to allow for transformative solutions. The project team will work with legal counsel to enable transformative solutions that prioritize safety, connectivity, and community needs.
