Next time tell them tacos really aren't that good.

Well...  I do think hot sauce doesn't belong on fresh fruit or Cheetos...

Last weekend, I returned from leading VBS (Vacation Bible School) in Mexico.  As part of the first day's lesson, I was teaching about how each one of us has unique interests that isn't necessarily like the rest of our peers.  I asked a few of them to share something they like but no one else does, or something they don't like but everyone else does.  In that vein, I said in front of about 60 Mexican kids (plus adults) that soccer and baseball are both boring.

Holy cow, you should have seen the reaction!   :wow:

Well, it is pretty boring right now if you're a Mexico fan.

Super Bowl 50 should have been Super Bowl L.

As an aside, do movies and TV still use Roman Numerals for the copyright year? I feel like it's mostly fallen out of favor in the last 20-25 years; it was a little inscrutable to figure out if something like "MMIV" was a year, medical device, or internet protocol.

On the other hand, I was surprised they went all-in with Super Bowl XXX thirty years ago and nobody seemed to bat an eyelash.

For years of publication, it is usually done with the goal of obscuring how old a film actually is. Of course, it's not very difficult to determine years in the 21st century, but when you only have MCMLXXXVIII on your screen for 5 seconds, it's pretty difficult to determine that publication year is 1988 unless you're really good at reading Roman numerals.

My main beef with Super Bowl 50 not being represented as L is that the logo sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of a bunch of logos featuring Roman numerals. I understand why they did it, but they really should have either gone with Arabic numerals instead for a few years going forward or found a way to make the L look aesthetically pleasing enough.

What purpose does obscuring a film's age serve?  Doesn't it come during the ending credits anyway?

Here's a shocker:  It's all about the marketing.  It's not clear that "L" by itself is a Roman numeral, and it's not visually attention-getting even with a fancy font.  I believe there also was concern that people would think "lose" or "loser" when seeing the "L" on its own in the name of a sports match.

Super Bowl XXX probably got past the brain trust because it was depicted as Super Bowl xxx.

I already addressed that point. They could have gone with Arabic numerals for at least a few years so that "50" wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Originally to make a work appear timeless during re-screenings when there was no way to watch it outside of a theater setting. These days? Nothing more than tradition.

Are you saying the date used to appear at the beginning of the film when played in theaters?

Because, again, if you've already watched the movie, then what do you care anymore what year it came out?

College sports scholarships shouldn't exist.

High school teachers shouldn't have to arrange their teaching schedules with sports in mind, nor should they have to make exceptions for students who miss class for sports events.

School is for learning.  Sports are just games to play in your spare time.

Hm.  Perhaps we should adopt the old East German school structure where athletes are trained and groomed to solely be athletes, rather than continue with this facade of giving athletes a formal education in some other field. :D

I'm fine with students also being athletes.  Just so long as their school athletics don't interfere with their actual studies.  If they'd rather play games than go to class, then why are they in school?

If college students can work as internships while studying and gaining practical experience; why can't college athletes gain similar experience while they study?

And sports can be thought of as a study of psychology, economics/financing, anatomy/physiology, mathematics/statistics, physics, communications, and medical studies.  I also imagine college players taking courses on nutrition science while they're at it.
