The North Split (I-65/70) interchange is the sixth-busiest interchange in Indiana.

A quick look today showed the following (by traffic volume):

1. I-69/I-465/I-70 (east side)
2. I-465/I-69 (Clear Path)
3. I-465/I-65 (south side)
4. I-74/I-465/I-70 (west side)
5. I-65/I-80/I-94 (Borman)
6. I-65/I-70 (North Split)

That surprises me, I expected something on the Borman would be 1.

If you measured only trucks, I'm certain that I-65/80/94 would be #1, but a lot more commuters are using those Indy interchanges.

I'm actually surprised the Borman made in the top five at all. While it may have the worst traffic of any interstate in Indiana, there are only 2 system interchanges on the Borman, I-65 and the Toll Road. The Toll Road has traffic volumes on par with area surface streets and is far enough east that the Borman has lost half of its peak volume. The north leg of the I-65 interchange only has 27k AADT, and the south leg has 98k. This is practically a directional interchange where I-65 feeds the Borman about 40% of its volume between I-65 and the IL state line.

Realistically, you could say IN 912 - Cline Ave is a system interchange since it is a freeway north of the Borman. But I get your point.

Hmm, seeing this makes me think that the I-65 interchange on the south side might need reconfiguring minus the I-465WB-65SB ramp they added years ago. Sure does feel very outdated travelling through it in 2026.
Apparently I’m a fan of I-69.  Who knew.

Some of it could be related to the interchange itself but I feel most of the congestion in that area is simply from the sheer amount of traffic along I-465. At that point I-465 now has both I-69 and I-74 traffic, plus several U.S. highways. And further more, the southern part of I-465 acts as an unofficial bypass for I-70 and to the west of that interchange is part of the unofficial bypass of I-65. So there's a lot of interstate's worth of traffic on that stretch of highway. And it's only six lanes in width. Capacity needs to be added to that whole stretch of roadway from US 31 on the south side to I-70 on the east side. That would help more than any additional change to the 465/65 interchange itself.

The biggest issues with the southern Interstate 465/65 interchange, based on my experience driving it nearly daily, are the lack of ramp capacity and the weaving.

  • While the ramp from Interstate 465 west to Interstate 65 south is two lanes, it has to merge with the undersized ramp from Interstate 465 east to Interstate 65 south.
  • The Interstate 465 east to Interstate 65 south ramp is undersized at one lane and will back up to the East Street ramp well before peak times. The ramp's curves and grade keep traffic moving more slowly than it should.
  • The tight east- and westbound Interstate 65 to Interstate 465 ramps have substandard 25-MPH curves and left merges. They recently lengthened the acceleration lane, but it only moves the choke point further away.
  • Three lanes depart from Interstate 65 north to Interstate 465, with the Interstate 465 westbound ramp coming from the slow lane of Interstate 65. This backs up through-traffic in that lane to Southport Road at peak, resulting in slow, weaving traffic in the other through lanes. (And frustratingly, people stop in the through lanes to be let into the queue for Interstate 465.)
  • Weaving between Interstate 465 and Emerson Avenue, and to a lesser extent, Interstate 65 and Southport Road.

The Ghostbuster

Are there any plans to reconstruct the southern Interstate 65/465 interchange? Next time it happens, all ramps should be expanded to two lanes.

Sadly, I doubt it. It's only been a decade since it was last rebuilt.

I wouldn't call one ramp conversion a "rebuild" of an interchange. When I looked at the I-69 Finish Line traffic forecast documents I know there's at least a concept of rebuilding the US 31 interchange and there was another alternative for a rebuild at the I-65 interchange, though both of those were forecasts for the 2040 year.

New I-465 lanes set to open soon in the Clear Path work zone. Facebook post from the project:

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1G1AtMMoCG/

QuoteClear Path 465 is reaching a major milestone, with the end of construction on mainline I-465 in sight.
Here's what's coming soon on Clear Path 465:
🚧 Traffic shifts as new lanes and bridges are completed
🚧 Three lanes open in each direction in final configuration on I-465 during final work
When final touches are complete, I-465 will open to four through lanes in each direction.

Traffic cameras show new striping on I-465 between I-69 and 71st St, indicating that the lane shift is coming this weekend or next most likely.
