Quote from: tchafe1978 on July 11, 2026, 11:55:25 PMGoogle Gemini. I'm sick of it popping up when I try to switch between apps on my phone. I don't want it, I don't need it, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I told it to fuck off a couple times, and it will respond, "this user seems to be very upset". Damn straight I'm upset because I can't get it gone.

On that note, the way that all the social media apps these days turn everything into an AI search. I can't describe the level of bothered I feel when I go to the search bar to look up a page, and it pulls up a ChatGPT-style summary of whatever I searched instead of just displaying results.

I wound up with "black toe" (big toe's nail turned black and fell off) when I stubbed my toe hard into the bottom stair while wearing sneakers about four years ago. I was starting to step up when our cat came racing down the stairs and startled the crap out of me.

For me it was catching my small left toe on the bed post.  It bent backwards pretty hard and swelled up within in minutes.  I actually hiked seven miles on it that day since I had plans to propose to Jessica at Hume Lake.

For clarification though, in all the years I lived in Arizona I always wore shoes in the house.  Scorpion stings and spider bites were for some reason a common occurrence when I had been walking around barefoot at home.

I have rarely worn shoes in the house and never broke a toe.

Rather live in clean house. :D

(There's good reason why northeastern houses have mudrooms.  Take your shoes off, you uncivilized swine).

Now that I think about it shoes in the house are also common in Mexico.  Bite prone bugs and hard surface floors seem to be a common theme to homes in arid or semi-arid areas.

The only time I really care about shoes in the house is when it comes to shoes being on carpets and rugs, which is a big no-no for me. If a hard floor gets dirty, a simple scrub/mop will do, but you get a carpet dirty and that's not getting truly clean until you pay a professional cleaning service to come, or rent a carpet cleaning machine and do it yourself.

I generally wear different shoes in the house than I wear outside. I used to go barefoot (provided the weather was warm enough), but I started routinely wearing something on my feet back in late 2021 when we adopted our first cat because she tended to track litter around in her paws and I didn't like the gritty feel of it. Our current cat doesn't get nearly as much litter in her paws and I could probably go barefoot again, but I'm now used to wearing something (even if it's just a cheap pair of Birkenstock knock-offs).

This does not happen to me on my Android phone.  Must be a way to turn it off.

I wasn't able to completely turn it off, but I made it somewhat less annoying. I had been using swipe gestures to switch between apps, and Gemini would pop up at least half the time. I went into the settings and changed it back to  having a home, back, and switch app buttons instead. Now it only pops up if I double tap the home button. I've searched and searched for a way to turn in off completely but have yet to figure it out.

I got the best of both worlds.  I broke a toe by stubbing it on the vacuum cleaner.

I'm in the GIS division at New Castle County.  Every so often, a call will be directed to me for something I really can't do much about.  (And more often than not, no one else at the County can either.)  The most common are requests for a property measurement.  Once, though, I was asked to verify property boundaries (which I can sort of do).  The question came down from the homeowner asking why she was obligated to keep the grass in the adjacent right-of-way cut when she didn't own it.  (I referred her to her town government.)

kphoger

I'm not talking about either of those things.  I'm talking about when they mow the lawn all the way to the curb, but then they apparently can't figure out how to mow the final three inches of grass right before the curb.  So the whole lawn is cut—except for that three-inch strip all the way across their property.

Quote from: A.J. Bertin on July 15, 2026, 06:31:05 AMBarring any unforeseen circumstances, my "city meet" in 2027 will take place in El Paso, Texas.

Because I know there's a direct overnight bus between Kansas City and El Paso that stops in Wichita, I decided to hop on their website out of curiosity to see what the price of a round-trip ticket is.  I plugged in dates for a random week-end:  August 28 through September 1.  It showed me the prices, and then it asked me to select my seat for each direction.

Tell me if you notice what I noticed, and then tell me if it bothers you too.

The bus company must use the "same seats" rule, like on school field trips when the teachers didn't want kids fighting over seats on the way back.

I think it's nice that, although they require the one differently-abled rider allowed on each trip to cling to the driver's side quarterpanel of the bus, they at least give them a TV to watch while they do so.
