The Ghostbuster

That's good news. US 69/75 should be completely freeway between the Oklahoma/Texas border and OK 22 (Exit 26).

Quote from: The Ghostbuster on July 29, 2026, 10:37:54 AMAlthough I would definitely support extending Interstate 45 northward into Oklahoma, the likelihood of it happening is slim to none. I will believe it when I see it.

What about an I-44 type of setup that has I-45 go as far as US 82 in Sherman (which their city leaders might like initially) or US 70 in Durant (which those running the Choctaw casino might like)?

I really don't know why you chose US-82 as the potential endpoint. US-69 seems like a more complete point out just south of the state line.

They were just 2 examples I came up with, I wasn't saying those were the only 2 possibilities.

While US-82 fulfills the "end at a US Highway" checkbox for 2DI interstates, it is a poor choice. US-70 is a good choice. If US-82, why not US-380? The freeway (US-75) between US-82 and US-69 is all up to spec. The issue for US-69 is not why? It is "why not"?

Certainly not worth arguing about; It is not that important either way. Until it is freeway all the way to at least I-40 it is all just an issue of signs any way.
Let's build what we need as economically as possible.

An interstate  Orth to just US 82 would prevent easy decommissioning of US 75 within Texas or even up to Atola, OK.  The US 69 junction would simplist as ODOT would not be required to be involved for either decommissioning US 75 or naming an interstate extension or new interstate.  If ODOT wanted to join, so much the better though.

Beyond road nerds, is there a particular reason to keep US-75 active in Texas?

Actually as a road nerd I think keeping US 75 would be the wrong move if Texas brands the road an interstate.  I applaud the California Department of Highways and Public Works 1960s decommissioning of US highways that were not actual interstate - crossing into neighboring states. Simplicity, functionality and avoidance of numbering redundancy is elegant in its own right.

I would relish US 75 being truncated back to Atoka by ODOT if TxDOT were to make the first move.

What's so hard about a "duplex"  Meaning having a US 75 and an I-45 shield side by side?   The road has been US 75 for decades.   Having a duplex is the best solution for familiarity, with local residents.

The Ghostbuster

Duplexes are likely seen as unnecessary clutter. Historically, Texas was slow to truncate parallel US Highways to completed Interstate corridors, long after said corridors were completed. US 66 was co-designated with Interstate 40 until 1985. US 75 was co-designated with Interstate 45 until 1987. US 80 was co-designated with Interstates 10, 20, and 30 until 1991. 1991 was also the year that US 81's duplex with Interstates 35 and 35W was eliminated, and US 290's duplex with Interstate 10 ended. If Interstate 45 is ever extended northward, US 75 should be truncated immediately following 45's extension.

Road Hog

The only reason US 69 near the Red River would be an end point is only because Oklahoma isn't ready or willing yet (pending the Calera gap). We'll find out how much pull Choctaw Nation has.

I don't think there will be much problem with the locals. In Dallas and Collin COunty it has never been "US-75" it has always been "Central" (expressway). In Grayson county, it is just "the (only) Freeway". While a short portion of US-82 is freeway, it is just "HWY 82". The extension of DNT is coming eventually, but right now, it is seemingly a decade or more off.

This is absolutely the case. It seems that Oklahoma is in no rush. People are still getting to the casinos. Even at that, the stuff in McCurtain county is around 75 miles from any freeway and they are thriving!

The Choctaws expended their political ammunition on the Calera job, which vastly improved thru traffic while increasing access to the tribal business (including the casino).
