Oh I think it will definitely be a help. I make 4 or 5 round trips thru there per year -- it is short but will be a welcome improvement. It will bypass both the VA-193 and GW Parkway local interchanges and carry it to the end of the ALB.

Just not being under construction any longer will be an improvement, especially with the outer loop evening rush sun field for the next few months.

I think the inner loop will be a bit better for the reasons Beltway cited.  I am less certain about the outer loop.  There is a weave between Clara Barton Pkwy and GW Pkwy.  Many commuters use CB Pkwy to get to the Outer Loop who are not going to GW Pkwy or VA 193 and the weave makes things pretty crowded most days.  The new problem will be that if these folks (as I often did before I retired) want to access the express lanes, they will now have to work their way over 4 lanes in that same weave space in order to do so, since they are removing the up-to-now access to the lanes from the outer loop.  Getting 4 lanes over basically on just the ALB is very, very difficult.

So is the existing outer loop entrance going away?

For me a big benefit will be the ability to enter the HOT lanes before having to slog thru the GW Parkway and VA-193 interchanges.

From the 495 express lanes page

QuoteSince the Extension will expand the current Express Lanes almost to Maryland, drivers who today go between Georgetown Pike and the Express Lanes should remember to find a new route. To get to Georgetown Pike from the Lanes, exit to the George Washington Memorial Parkway and head toward Route 123 southbound. To get on the Extension from Georgetown Pike, head toward the Dulles Toll Road and go eastbound.

Yes -- about 1/2 mile before the Dulles Toll Road.

As far as accessing the HOT lanes from Clara Barton Parkway, they may need to use that entrance as well.

If Maryland builds a similar 4-2-2-4 arrangement between VA and I-270, they could have an express/local Clara Barton Parkway interchange like the new GW Parkway interchange. That may be the solution.

From the way the information at https://expresslanes.com/495Extension is written, I get the impression that the existing access point between the Old Dominion Drive and Lewinsville Road overpasses will be removed. Hence the notice Mapmikey cited about having to find a new route from Georgetown Pike to the express lanes if you go that way.

In theory, someone who's on Georgetown Pike or Balls Hill Road who wants to go south on the express lanes could go north, exit to the GW Parkway, then use Turkey Run Park to turn around and head back and access the express lanes directly via the new ramp at the interchange between the GW Parkway and the Beltway. I guess that could also work for someone going northbound in the express lanes who wants to access Georgetown Pike—use the new express lane exit to the Parkway, turn around, and use the existing ramp to the I-495 mainline. While this is somewhat out of the way, it's arguably less so than taking the Parkway all the way to the Route 123 exit as Transurban seems to suggest. The bigger problem would occur in the afternoons because Maryland-bound traffic backs up the GW Parkway approaching the Beltway (the lane that goes to Virginia is not spared because Maryland drivers view it as their God-given right to block that lane in order to cut the line).

Because of the forecast rain tonight and tomorrow, they've pushed back the new extension's opening until sometime Sunday.

Took the Beltway HO/T lanes to a doctor appointment this morning and saw they've changed the toll rate signs so that the last line now reads "495N–GWP" (reflecting the new express exit to the George Washington Parkway). Toll rates were pretty high due to the very heavy rain, of course—$26.45 to go the full length at 8:15 AM.

I tried them last week, mostly to see how easy it would be to move over 5 lanes and take the Clara B exit. And, as with most times I take the purple lanes, the pricing seems based on the traffic in the main lanes, not the Express lanes. If the only car in front of me is only visible when the road is straight, and there is nobody in my rear view mirror, I should pay the minimum or awfully close.

I haven't used the new segment yet and haven't been on that part of the Beltway since October. My appointment today was in Merrifield, so I took the express lanes from Springfield to Route 29. Toll for that portion was around $14. There was reasonably heavy traffic in the express lanes, probably because the mainline was just so darn slow in the pouring rain. The combination of weather plus some people driving more slowly due to the weather meant I was going 55–60 rather than 65–70, but I still got to the appointment 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Plus they took my blood pressure and I have no doubt I got a lower reading than I would have had I fought the traffic in the mainline or used Backlick Road/Annandale Road/Gallows Road to avoid the Beltway.

Did they make the speed limit on these lanes 65 like the rest of the system or 55 like how the other lanes started out?
I can drive 55 ONLY when it makes sense.

I will be interested is seeing how much the end-to-end toll goes up. Based on distance I surmise 10-15%.

I took the Beltway HO/T lanes to Tysons yesterday and discovered that the exit formerly signed as Jones Branch Drive is now signed—more accurately, to be sure—as Scott's Crossing Road. What was odd, however, is that the electronic signs showing toll rates all still call it "Jones Br." In the scheme of things, it's probably not going to confuse most people who use that exit because I doubt many non-local drivers go that way, but it struck me as weird to have inconsistent names on the signs. I didn't get a photo. I wasn't expecting anything new on a very familiar road, so my phone was in my jacket pocket and my jacket was in the back seat. The new sign for that exit was a rather different shade of green from most other BGSs in Virginia. A rather flat color, for lack of a better term.

When I was leaving to head back home, I saw the toll from the Westpark bridge to the GW Parkway (about a four-mile drive) was showing as $14.90. Ouch. I was glad I was going the other way. (I don't remember what the toll to go the whole length of the lanes was when I entered on my way out because I made a stop in Fairfax en route and I wasn't paying attention to the toll signs.)

Thanks. Shows you how often I go that way, I guess! While we always go to L'Auberge Chez François in December, and the fastest route is the Beltway to the Dulles Toll Road, this past December we picked up my mom from her house in Fairfax and I decided to go out Hunter Mill Road for a change of pace. So I hadn't seen the sign.

They have extended the toll lanes on I-495 east through the I-95/395/495 interchange.

Not visible through GMSV yet but has occurred since May when the last GMSV was there.

This eliminates the ability to do a little bypass through that interchange from either direction on the beltway.  People would use it if the regular lanes were backed up.  Now this is no longer possible without an EZ-pass.

No news item I can find but the website for the HOT lanes has this included in plan your trip dropdown menus as I-95/495 near Van Dorn St.

I can confirm that: I was just on the Beltway shortly after noon, entering at Van Dorn, and the sign showed a toll of $2.30 to "I-495NB" (it's never shown any such thing before). That's more than the $2.25 it showed to use I-95 southbound to the flyover designated as "Backlick."

Not much of a bypass -- only about 3,000 feet. That would be there so that future HOV lanes east of there would have continuity thru the flyover section.

Where would HOT lanes to the east even go?  The Wilson bridge already has express lanes.

This is a lane that has existed for years built in anticipation of future connection to the express lanes that cross the Potomoac.  The gap is about 3 miles between the Springfield interchange and the start of the express lanes over the Potomac, which are about 6 miles long.

VDOT recently completed a study of this connection, which would convert the Wilson Bridge free express lanes to toll lanes - https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/northern-virginia-district/i-495-southside-express-lanes-study/

Recommended Preferred Alternative: 2 Express Lanes

The recommended preferred alternative is to add two (2) buffer
separated express lanes in each direction on I-495. The two express
lanes would extend from approximately the railroad bridge west of
Van Dorn Street to I-295, at which point they would transition to one
lane from there to the MD 210 Interchange to merge back into the
existing alignment of the Capital Beltway in Maryland.
. . . .
How are they going to have 2 HOT lanes each way on the WWB?

If it means killing shoulders I oppose it.

I certainly don't use those lanes in either direction very often, especially not eastbound because changing to the right across six lanes of traffic to get to my exit is not the most enjoyable (or safe) experience.

I don't anticipate any sort of HO/T lanes being added between Springfield and the bridge any time soon. Once the current governor took office in Maryland, that pretty much killed the chances of such a project any time soon unless VDOT were to cut back the eastern terminus to somewhere in Virginia. I've occasionally thought that what would make more sense than an HO/T system might be to extend the "Local/Thru" system west from its current terminus to the Springfield Interchange. Separate the long-distance traffic for that entire section. Maybe it would cut down on some of the severe crashes that occasionally happen at the separation point on the Outer Loop, usually due to some dipshit who pays no attention to any signs and then abruptly swerves across the gore area at the last second at high speed. (It seems like more often than not the culprits have Maryland plates.)

But I've had trouble visualizing how to make certain connections work. The main problem is how traffic would sort itself out in Springfield. There would need to be a way to connect between both the local and thru roadways and all of the following: I-95 south of Springfield, the Beltway west of Springfield, and I-395. How you configure that is something I've been unable to visualize, given how much of a tangle of flyovers and such that area already is.
