I can sympathize with the elderly wanting Buick style button center console controls.  Modern touch screen controls in most brands are dog shit.

Buick Verano Turbo was an interesting rental car, because it was an absolute sleeper, but that's about it for the last 20 years.

Quote from: minneha on August 31, 2026, 05:23:08 PMI'm mildly annoyed that GM still makes Buicks. Don't get me wrong, I'm a GM fan. I drive a Chevrolet. I just think that Buick is a brand that should be retired, as Pontiac and Oldsmobile were. GM should focus on three brands: Chevrolet as the flagship brand, GMC for rugged trucks and SUVs, and Cadillac for luxury vehicles.

Who still buys Buicks, anyway? A quick Google search says women and Chinese people.

You do know how many Chinese people are out there, right?

The aspirational status of Buick in China is largely the reason the brand was retained when GM went bankrupt.

Also, current era GM kind of sucks.  Unless you want a Corvette or a Cadillac you're stuck with SUVs/CUVs and truck offerings.

Reminds me of the old joke about the redneck with nine children who goes to the doctor for a vasectomy. The doctor is willing to perform the surgery, but he can't help but ask, "What made you decide to do this now?" His wife responds, "Well, we saw an article saying that one of every ten children born in this country is Mexican." The husband chimes in, "And we don't speak Spanish too good."

We don't have a non-vulgar term for female external genitalia.  For males, the word penis is socially acceptable and is not considered to be profane at all.  But the corresponding word vagina refers specifically to an internal organ, the equally common word pussy is considered vulgar, and people will think you're wacky if you use the word vulva in conversation.  (cue Seinfeld)

So, for example, if a parent wants to mention her baby's diaper rash to a Sunday school nursery worker, then it's pretty easy for a male baby:  He has some diaper rash on his penis.  But for a female baby, it's more awkward to communicate that same message because of this:  She has some diaper rash on her... umm... her... you know...

No, I understood that. It was more the absurdity of the word she used. There is actually a fair amount of case law from courts around the country regarding the use of "anatomically correct dolls" when children are testifying in cases involving molestation, indecent exposure, etc. When the child uses euphemisms (as most of them will), there's been some disagreement on whether it's appropriate just to give the kid such a doll and say to point to the part of the body in question or whether first counsel should ask more questions like "what do you mean by 'hoo-hah' or 'winky'"? The point of the exercise is to confirm what the kid means by the euphemism because of the great variety of terms that exist.

On a lighter note, now I'm thinking of Steve Harvey's reaction in the well-known Family Feud Fast Money round:

On Night Stand with Dick Dietrick they used the clinically correct terms, "Mr. Peeps" and "woo woo."  Even on that show they seemed to be too uncomfortable using the real proper terms, so the parts were referred to, alternatively, as "a penis" and "female sex organs."  (I did notice that unequal thinking when I saw this back in the 90s.)

Please don't tell Mrs. Slocombe that there's anything wrong with the way she refers to her cat.  She's old school and wouldn't understand.

It works, assuming people actually know the word, but see the bolded part.  I'm pretty sure I've never heard the word in casual conversation a single time in my life.

Sorry, missed the bolded part. I agree that it's not common to hear, but that's more because women don't talk about their genitalia in mixed company and dudes talk about their dingalings all the time (relatively).

I also think some men don't actually realize what the difference between a vulva and a vagina is. Men on average tend to be quite a bit less informed about how female genitalia work than women are about penises.

You talk to different people than I do. Also, there's not a lot of overlap between people who will be confused if you say vulva and people who will get upset if you call the external genitalia a vagina, so figure out who you're talking to and pick one I guess?

Do women actually know, though?  I thought the extent of most women's knowledge about that was basically, —It gets bigger somehow, and then semen comes out, which I think comes from the testicles maybe, but now that I say it out loud I'm not totally sure about that.

I think the main difference is that many men think they're an expert on female anatomy when they are not. Whereas women don't claim to be experts on male anatomy.
