So, if the 80s were long before you were even born, then I wouldn't expect you to have a good sense of how long ago it was.

But I do understand what you're getting at.  It's hard for me to believe that a 1989 Toyota Camry would qualify for an 'antique' license plate here in Kansas.

We used to own a 2000 Honda CR-V, but seeing one last year with an Antique plate (it was Connecticut) rattled my age cage.

I met someone with a 1990 Miata also with an Antique plate, and asked if that made any sense to his younger self..."Nope!"

Our car is a 2002 Ford Focus.  In Kansas, though, a car has to be at least 35 years old for an 'antique' license plate, so I doubt I'll still have it by the time it qualifies.

Here in Virginia, it's 25 years, and you also have to show that you have another vehicle for general transportation. Two of our cars (the 2003 and 2004 Acuras) will be eligible for antique plates within the next few years, though I doubt we'll apply for them. The main advantages are that the car is exempt from state safety inspection, the state registration is permanent (so you need not pay every two years to renew it), and an individual can exempt one antique from personal property/county registration fee. The combination of state and county registration adds up to around $100 a year. Car tax is kind of a nonissue because both of those cars were assessed as worth $100 this year, so we don't owe tax on either one.

Side note: I never realized how difficult it is to photograph birds until I tried. You either have to be extremely patient and stay in place for hours (I get bored after 30 minutes if I'm not moving), and they also move unpredictably in three dimensions, which flummoxes auto-focus. Or you just get lucky and ready at once.

Like we clinch places they check-off and catalog their sightings.

The amount of knowledge they have about birds and animals is pretty overwhelming.  It makes me wonder if I make people feel the same when I talk about stuff like old highways.

Security cameras are owned by businesses and basically never accessed unless there's a reason to.

Flock cameras are being put everywhere, having footage stored in data centers, and connected to algorithms to track movement and activities of people without legal probable cause. They're also being used by rogue law enforcement to follow ex-girlfriends and things of the like.

You haven't had assumed privacy on private property since surveillance cameras have been cheap enough to be useful. You always have assumed privacy on public property.

You haven't had assumed privacy on private property since surveillance cameras have been cheap enough to be useful. You always have assumed privacy on public property.
