New Car Smell

I am retiring my old war wagon in favor of a new van. Only problem is, the "new car" smell makes me ill. Any suggestions on how to neutralize the smell?

Turn on the heater and open all the windows on a hot day, that will bake it out, what you're smelling is all the plastics and paint curing.

But how to get rid of it, Idk. I agree with some of the theories on this thread though, those will probably work.

A good part of what you are smelling these days is most likely "new car smell" synthesized into perfume and sprayed into the car. This is why it persists for longer than it used to. This is also how they can make not-new things smell new.

Still, the heater on approach can be used to bake out some smells, for example, get a car that was smoked in, do that...and it somewhat goes away, at least for a bit. I would leave it parked, windows cracked, in the sun, as much as possible, that way it vents out.

Yes to running the heater full blast and leaving the windows open in the sun.  Also, make it smell like something you do like.  Do you like coffee?  Leave trays of fresh coffee grounds on the floor for a while...

put some carpet deoderizer on the seats and carpet, or just use baking soda, it will remove fabric odors.

When I saw "new car smell", it immediately remained me of a prank I pulled on my supervisor at TxDOT. He had just got a new state pickup. Myself and another guy were helping him transfer his stuff from the old truck to the new one. I climbed into the new one to place a crate of items inside. While inside, I farted. When my supervisor came back over, I said "Ted, don't you just love that new truck smell". About that time he took a big wiff, just as I had hoped he would.

Or it's just well taken care of.  My 107,000 mile (3 year old) Dodge Caliber still has some of the "new car smell".
