the glass reflectors are about 1929-1942 vintage, though some states used them well into the 60s

This entire thread makes me weep.

Maybe if we got angry and headed to AASHTO's headquarters with pitchforks and rudeness, we could get them to stop being conformists?  :-D
So many roads...so little time.

How about if we went to their headquarters armed with 16x16 embossed steel US shields and drop the ends on their bare tootsies?

Can we hold up signs stating, "Death to AASHTO"?

Well, with PennDOT renumbering I-376 and I-279, this is technically an old assembly :sombrero:

These are from http://www.floridamemory.com/PhotographicCollection/

The first generation Secondary Route shields (as mentioned in the Florida thread). There were pictures dated from 1953-1960 showing these (don't know how accurate the dates are, but they should be pretty accurate).

I found a couple old signs out in the wild today

http://www.davidjcorcoran.com/IMG_3179.JPG

That one's at the northern terminus of WYO 343 at WYO 345 north of Dayton- looks to be an original I-90 trailblazer

http://www.davidjcorcoran.com/IMG_3358.JPG
I pulled onto a side road off WYO 290 to take a piss and when I came back I found that junction sign. It looks to be pretty old, but there are no legible markings on the back of it. I'm not sure what era that highway sign is from or if it was ever a standard sign

agentsteel53

WTF is up with that state route marker?  It definitely was not a standard.  Wyoming state shields have had identifying stickers for many years... you can see the "00" for the I-90 shield.  That 90 may have been made by a Montana contractor - that state is known for its peeling legends.

Hence the sign!  :sombrero:

Look at the old small-font Interstate signs there in Detroit. That's a nice pic hellfighter!

The NC Postcard Project has a number of postcards that show route shields...I will post links later but here is one that shows the brief US 401 before US 15A came along in 1935 was indeed posted in the field:

http://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/nc_post&CISOPTR=1647&CISOBOX=1&REC=2
In the viewer, zooming in 1 time improves the resolution...

Other shields I have found include NC 70, old NC 47, NC 284...

found this one in an Ad in a 1953 Life Magazine I was thumbing through last weekend.  Technically it wasn't an old sign on the internet at the time, but since I uploaded the picture to my server i guess it qualifies as an old sign on the internet now  :)

From OH, 1953...

Where Concurrent US 127/OH 128 junctions w/ concurrent OH 129/OH 177 in Hamilton.

Hellfighter:

That pic of the I-75/Square Lake Road gantry is unusual in that, I have NEVER seen Michigan use any kind of lighting for their overhead BGS.  That is a rarity indeed!
