I much prefer US-81 to I-81.  Here is an old Texas sign.

(the Virginia photo, btw, was taken in 1973.)

That fabulous array of signs agentsteel posted no longer exists. On Google Street View the only thing I can see that still remains is the utility pole to the left of the route 32 shield.

I know right where that is too... Suffolk, VA. VDOT's kept the signs pretty current down there, at least I haven't been able to find any old ones left.

Sticking with a US Route...

LOTS for you to choose from here, and apologies for the rain.

And sticking with the collector/distributor theme:

There is a route shield visible in the full size picture if anyone wants to use it to continue

wow, I did not know Ontario ever used black scotchlite (black under normal light, but retro-reflective white).  learn something new every day.  staying with the black scotchlite theme...

that photo is taken with the flash.  Normally the shield is white with black legend.  It is a Massachusetts marker.  16x16 inches, dating to possibly as far back as 1948.

did a New Hampshire contractor make that Mass state route 9 pair??  That - black rounded rectangle border within white sharp-corner rectangle - is a 1930s-1960s NH specification.

alas Doug has posted a 25-28 gantry in the meantime, but this photo is too good to not share!

(state highway 28 goes into RI and NH so hey it's tangentially related ;) I believe NH-28/MA-28/RI-28 is old New England route 28 from the 1922 system... and hey, look at that, a 25 sign in this photo, too!)

US-3 cutouts are dang hard to find.  I've never seen an embossed one; just this flat style.

some Nova Scotia style shields ... in New Brunswick???

NB apparently tried that style for a few years in the 1960s before going back to their usual province-outline style.
