We saw the commercial sprawl on the west side of Interstate 471 last month. Had no idea that they tore up an entire neighborhood in addition to blasting the adjacent hillside to accommodate that.

The current Google Map aerial photo shows the area before the streets and the hillside were torn out, but the buildings were already gone.  It's sad just how destructive to the landscape big box (or even not so big box) retail can be, especially considering we have so much more retail space than is really needed.

And especially since they've let the old Thriftway in downtown Newport sit empty for the past 7 years or so.
