Columbus was built solely to end the fighting between Chillicothe and Zanesville over who would be the capital.

Pete from Boston

This area is overpopulated with famous landmarks, but one of my favorites, located on a shortcut I use when I'm near it, is Grandfather's House, a Greek-revival house that is the original subject of the poem "Over the River and Through the Woods."

When I lived in the Atlanta area, I was close to Stone Mountain.

I live 20 mins away from my current job: the UPS CACH facility which is the largest UPS Ground facility in the entire North American system
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!

The closes landmarks to where I was raised are three churches that are now on the National Register of Historic Places. Actually, I'm not sure this counts, but there was also the Medford Hotel, which was an apparent old railroad hotel near the LIRR station that for the latter portion of the 20th Century was the Landmark Restaurant. Now it's a J&R Steak House franchise.

So basically, Medford, New York doesn't have diddley when it comes to landmarks.

On the other hand, I currently live east of Weeki Wachee. I went there once before the state bought it. I have yet to see a mermaid show.

I work just a couple of miles from the Vulcan statue - the world's largest cast iron statue.

I grew up within 2 miles of Hollywood & Vine.  I was very close to Pink's, a famous LA area hot dog.

My current work is about half-way between the US Capitol and the White House.

Which also means you're close to the Navy Memorial, the Archives, the FBI building, and the Old Post Office.

Yes, very much so.  But the White House and US Capitol are nationally known landmarks, the others are only locally known.

Eh, the Archives is known to keen travelers, and it still gets its share of tourism.

I work a couple miles from the purported site of Henricus, an early colonial settlement that was eventually abandoned.

Historic Downtown Chambersburg, about 4 miles away from me.

With such landmarks as....    :poke:
The fountain in a psuedo-roundabout, a couple of churces, Ben Chamber's grave, the historic junction of US 11/US 30....

I think we're looking for something more on the lines of Gettysburg.
If you are a Civil War history type person, you'd also know the three occasions when Chambersburg was occupied by the Confederates, and when the town was burnt down in 1864.

The thing about wars is that nearly every town can claim something that occurred during that war.
Not necessarily...

For me, there's Devils Tower (50 miles), Spearfish Canyon (13 miles), and the Center of the Nation (20 miles to the fake one, 42 miles to the real one).

You mean the FUTURE DONALD TRUMP HOTEL, as the huge banners have proclaimed for the past few years?

In Connecticut, I joke that when I'm arriving at Bradley, it takes me longer to get from plane to car than it does to drive home; and I often describe my residence as being "at the end of the runway".

In Memphis, I had someone correctly identify my location when I mentioned that I was parked at exactly 90°W and one other piece of trivia.

I live about 20 minutes (10ish miles) from Terminal Tower. I'm also 45 minutes to an hour away from the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.

I go to college a few miles away from the world's largest building by volume:
