The New York one goes through New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  If you start at Montauk Point and follow the Thruway (I-87/I-90) all the way to the Pennsylvania border, it's 615 miles.
But the Goog doesn't route you along the Thruway all the way (minimally modified to avoid PA and NJ). Still, this gives you 558, vs. 554 for starting on NY 18.

Road Hog

Trying to figure out which is the longer diagonal in Arkansas: Gravette to Eudora or St. Francis to Ravanna. The former is the faster because it's mostly interstate or expresway, hands down.

The Thruway isn't the most direct route between NYC and Syracuse though (both points within the route) - NY 17 to I-81 is.  I'm sure we can get any state into the 1000s with enough zig-zags.

I noticed this on Kurumi's CT route. Very close to his start point in Thompson, CT, is Gore Road in neighboring Douglas, MA. The road briefly crosses into the northeast corner of Thompson, hence the small stone marker shown here. It's also along the very brief CT/MA border which goes N/S like this. ---> |

As for Maine's longest intrastate route, it would undoubtedly have to start in Kittery, with either I-95 or US Route 1. Perhaps the entire run of US Route 1 itself would be the winner at 527 miles/848 km?  :hmmm:

vdeane

US 1 also goes out of the way; the longest direct I can come up with is 432 miles, from Kittery to Estcourt Station, using a modification to keep the route in the US.

Might be fun to do Canadian provinces.  Those distances can be pretty big, but Nunavut's is probably surprisingly small due to the lack of roads up there.

Maryland: South of Ocean City (Although the road goes further if you have 4WD) to US-219 south of Oakland: 331 Miles: http://goo.gl/maps/NE5qr

You can do even longer if you start from Md. 12 or U.S. 13 at the Md./Va. border.  But you have to cheat (as Steve put it) to stay inside the state.

Google maps wants you to take the Capital Beltway, I-66 in Virginia to I-81 to U.S. 48 (!) all the way to Scherr, then W.Va. 93 to W.Va. 42 to U.S. 50 at Mount Storm, then back into Maryland, across Backbone Mountain to U.S. 219 then south to the W.Va. border near Silver Lake, W.Va.

Can't get to Google Maps out here, but theoretically for Minnesota, the longest would either be New Albin, IA (MN 26 at the Iowa line) to Noyes (US 75 at the Canadian border) or the MN/SD/IA tri-point to Grand Portage.
The MN-SD-IA tripoint to the end of Sag Lake Trail (a spur of the Gunflint Trail) is actually longer at 576 miles, versus the tripoint to Grand Portage at 562 miles (the quick and dirty way of just using the interstates). Noyes to New Albin, at 547 miles if you route it all in MN, is out of the question.

Here's the longest possible route in Minnesota, unless someone can think of something longer. http://goo.gl/maps/jJX1Y

I dropped a pin in far southwestern Kentucky, near the Tennessee state line and the Mississippi River (but not in Kentucky Bend to keep the route all in the state) and I dropped another pin at the easternmost route I could find in Pike County near the Virginia state line.

Results here: http://goo.gl/maps/jlnjQ

I first tried dropping a pin up in northeastern Kentucky in Greenup County, where the Ohio River makes a big bend, but the distance was shorter than the Pike County location.

Yours dips into Tennessee, though.

I tried a variation on that (the short URL is broken for me for some reason), starting from KY 971 at the Tennessee state line a couple miles east: https://www.google.com/maps?saddr=State+Hwy+971&daddr=Lower+Elk+Creek&hl=en&ll=36.490869,-89.132767&spn=0.247309,0.628967&sll=37.503913,-82.018658&sspn=0.001907,0.004914&geocode=FZ_zLAIdqSqs-g%3BFQFBPAIdb38c-w&mra=me&mrsp=1,0&sz=18&t=m&z=11

1995hoo

Decided to try this as to the District of Columbia. The furthest I could get was 17.5 miles, although the route Google gave me is not possible at all times because it uses a reversible portion of Rock Creek Parkway.
