(I was an idiot and posted this wrong board)

http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/press_0804091.html

Governor Paterson has decided to accept a major reconstruction for Route 112 in NY, including replacing 79-year old pavement? (Meaning some parts of NY 112 have not been paved since the 1930 renumbering :|)

Its also using ARRA funding,

Good or bad? Thoughts?

79 year old pavement?  I knew some pavement on NY 112 (particularly in Medford or Coram) was old, but not that old.

Roadgeek Adam

According to the article, 79 years old, which dates back to 1930.

Are there pictures of the old pavement anywhere?
So many roads...so little time.

Roadgeek Adam

Dunno. I have never been on NY 112

Don't think i've traveled it yet.  It'll be in my last planned LI trip, which I could do this fall.

It's in Long Island?? I was out there in April of this year  :pan:

If a trip happens again in October, then it will be covered.

Yes, NY 112 is on Long Island, out near the middle of Suffolk County.  I go to Long Island a few times a year, and I do believe that I have some pictures of this ancient concrete on my external hard drive.  I will review my files to see what I do have, before I go to Long Island.

I used to think it was older than that... like dating back to World War One.

In fact I still remember that there was once a metal plate going soutbound in Medford designed to trip the traffic signal at Horse Block Road(Suffolk CR 16).

Unfortunatley, being trapped in Florida until Christmastime, I'm not going to be able to see whatever improvements are supposed to be made on Route 112. And judging by the political power of ABCO, and NYSDOT's habit of caving into groups like this, I'm not 100% sure that the roadwork they're going to do can truly be called improvements.

Try looking at NY 112 on Google Maps in Street View.

Michael, I didn't thingk Google Maps has a street view of NY 112. Thanks for showing us one. Now I can use it to show the rest of you where the metal plate for the Horse Block Road signal was. That thing was around well into the late-1980's.

UPDATE: They're well into the makeover from Pine Road to 347.

A decent amount of signage has been added or replaced with the road being widened...most interesting one is NB 112 at CR 83 - the guide signs show the upcoming intersection as N. Ocean Avenue, which CR 83 doesn't turn into until 4 or so miles to the south.

They obviously forgot that everything north of Granny Road is Patchogue-Mount Sinai Road.

Too bad they're not preparing CR 83 and NY 347 for future interchanges.

I'm honestly upset about this!
I wish that the state would think about the history of the roads and not do it to "ease traffic"
I've lived on Long Island all my life, for a mere 15 years, and all the historic signs and roads are being tarnished by New York State.  :-(
It really is a shame that 112 is falling under the revamping process of the DOT
Hope everyone is safe!

The only history 112 seems to have is the old Patchogue-Port Jeff Stage Road stuff. It's a worthy upgrade. It definitely needs it.

I'm 100% with you on this. I grew up on Long Island most of my life too, and all that time I couldn't wait for Route 112 to be widened. I only wish they had done it according to a lot of the plans of 40 years ago, i.e. the realignment in Coram, and the subsequent realignment of NY 25. And there's still the issue of the lack of interchanges with Patchogue-Mt. Sinai Road and Nesconset-Port Jefferson Highway.

I finally got a chance to see it. WHAT A RIP-OFF!! All it has is a divider in occasional places, but it's still a measly two lanes wide!! Clearly another sign of the decline of the New York State Department of Transportation!

:banghead:

Hey, they can only do so much given NY's budget (or lack thereof).  I think they do great work when given the money they need (and the NIMBYs shut up).

actually, it seems a shame to destroy that history, how much 80 year old concrete is still being traveled on after 80 harsh Northeast winters.

There's a section of Suffolk County (NY) Road 48(Middle Road) east of Hashamomuck Pond on the North Fork of Long Island that's paved with old concrete, but when the traffic is bad, I'd still take a road that can handle it over one that's simply paved with 80-year-old concrete.

Let's hope "they" (probably the power company in this case) never destroy the remaining banked concrete of the Long Island Motor Parkway.

I accept and respect your identity as long as it's not dumb shit like "identifying as a vaccinated attack helicopter".

There are many sections that aren't on power company ROW.
