I'm actually seeing that as a pretty smart sign, given the context (where the center lane splits into a second turn lane as well as a through lane up ahead). What would be a less "dumb" way to phrase it?

How about "Left Turn MUST Turn Left"?

that doesn't indicate that it's not the left lane that divides ahead.

"LEFT LANE MUST TURN LEFT" / "RIGHT LANE MUST TURN RIGHT" is MUTCD sign that should be removed and replaced with symbolic turn-only lanes with arrows.

That would definitely be stating the obvious even more...

Assuming, though, that you meant "Left Lane MUST Turn Left", that's not what this sign is trying to say. While it's true that the left lane is a left-turn-only lane, there is another left-turn-only lane that diverges from the center lane. The sign is saying that the left lane can't use this second left-turn-only lane.

So you could say "Left Lane MUST Turn Left From Leftmost Left Turn Lane" but I would not describe that as the less dumb way to phrase it.

"LEFT LANE BEAR LEFT"? Is that any clearer?

Slightly less clear, I would say. "Keep left" conveys the message better, I think (as "bear left" implies something to do with a turn movement). But we don't need to find something clearer, just something less dumb.

Why not just restripe the turn lanes, and then you don't need the sign?
Call me Kenny/Kenneth. No, seriously.

For the most part, yes.  There are a lot of municipalities that like mast arms, but spanwire mounting seems to be more common.

Drug free school zone signs.  What is the real purpose of this sign? Is it implying that there are other school zones in the area that aren't drug free? This should go without saying, every school is intended to be drug free (which is likely untrue at every school these days).  Also the font size is too small and unreadable by anyone not within 5 feet of it.  the sign has a good intent I guess, but was it really necessary?  feel free to call me stupid for that rant, but I think it's a stupid sign.
To be stolen by stoner college students for dorm room wall decor

This is a legal technicality sign. It says that the police have the right to charge you with stiffer fines if you are caught with drugs (or guns when a "gun free zone" sign is present) inside the school area or (IIRC) within 1000 feet of those signs.

Here's a related sign in South Bend: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6349938,-86.2220426,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXNjSN91RNvp3NDyVTpuXng!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

This is the best view I could get out of GSV. It has a yellow SCHOOL banner above a picture of a vintage cell phone, with the red slash. BY ORDINANCE appears at the bottom. IIRC South Bend passed an ordinance a few years ago banning cell phone use by drivers within X feet of a school. The sign presumably denotes that limit.

Oh really... didn't know I had to wait for green  :ded:

You know, it just says "Wait for green". It doesn't say where I have to wait for the green. I could drive off and wait for the green at home.

It also doesn't say which green thing you're supposed to wait for.

The sign is green, so...

That wasn't a long wait at all!

Of course, if you hit that intersection in the fall, you may have to wait 6 months before the "green" grows back on the trees.  :bigass:

Out in my neck of the woods, the city & county posted signs at intersections saying "GIVING CHANGE DOESN'T MAKE A CHANGE" where panhandlers go with signs asking for money.

Of course the signs make no difference as people who can't read still give money to panhandlers who can't read at these intersections.

Might be a Delayed Green? But those are often signed as "Deleyed Green" or something similar.

I was always a fan of the Indiana version that combined "wait" and "delayed".  The narrower, taller series WAIT just demands attention.
