US 89

Yesterday was our hottest day of the year so far, with a high of 96. The good news is we get a bit of a break, with highs only in the 80s for the next few days. There will also be a bit of moisture present, so we have a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms today and tomorrow. Main threat appears to be severe wind gusts -- just in time for July 4th fireworks.

We have an interesting 4th of July forecast.  We have a 45% chance of rain/thunder until 7pm.  Dover's fireworks, I think, start at 9:30pm.

Still a 50% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, but I went for a bike ride this morning towards Little Creek (nearest town on the Delaware Bay to Dover, about a 5 mile ride).  It was pretty hazy here at 7:30am, but that's fairly typical for this time of year in Delaware.  A local weather station (Hidden Oaks on Weather Underground, in Downtown Dover) reported 81 degrees as the temperature with a 76 degree dewpoint at this time.

Typical May-October temps 90°+, with heat indices 100°-110°.
Fewer thunderstorms than usual for a temporary cool down.
Gulf Mexico water temp upper 80s, how is that relief from the heat
Locals prefer relaxing in the shade of a hwy bridge over the many rivers with waters 70°.

The photo was taken on South Little Creek Road, but I did ride both yesterday morning.  However, I'd never ridden North Little Creek Road until yesterday and realized that there's no shoulder (at least east of Route 1 - yes, I've driven on it before, but it's such a rare occurrence), so I went down Fox Road to get back to South Little Creek.

I left Dover in 1981, b4 rt1 was built. I remember how jammed 13 was during the summer. Then Bay Rd was just as bad where the 4 lane ended south of the DAFB main gate then the slog thru Little Heaven to the 4 lane at Frederica. sigh, good times :spin:

Warm in the mid 70s. There was an overnight earthquake about 20 miles away that didn't wake me from my sleep.
