Challenge: Post pictures of the oldest sign (NOT oldest photo of a sign) in your photo collection (can be a street sign, BGS (extra brownie points for button copy), freestanding route sign, distance sign, etc., etc.

My oldest sign-in-the-wild is probably this one:

Just a reminder that the February 9th Challenge is also still open until we have a qualifying submission.

This could and should have been done as one or two BGS's.

It should be noted that West Virginia signs splits at ramps such as the posted example as a matter of practice. There are existing BGSes at these interchanges; these signs are designed to be supplemental in nature.

I think Iowa does the same.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

It is, unless precluded by a specific Challenge. So, that one is now closed! (By the way, wonder what's the emergency in that example? It's September, so not likely to be winter weather!)

QuoteFEBRUARY 7: Post a single BGS that uses each of the 5 vowels exactly one time.  If that is too much of a challenge, any sign that contains all five vowels is fine.

The one on the right:

Despite a few missing letters, this was south of Jacksonville along I-95:

On US 22:

I suppose the trick is finding ones that don't have "SOUTH" or "EAST" on them; then again, sequoia has all five in one word.

Hint: Anything with the word education?
The florida example was on the news for a contractor error.  Florida was mis spelled Flordia not once but 2x on same sign

Ahh, the infamous "Flordia" sign. I was wondering if they would ever get around to fixing that.
It was fixed before being hung... People noticed while on ground

Not usually, that I've seen:

Example 2

That's why I took/posted that picture, because it is odd in my experience.

Nice!  Florida, NY, could have also done the trick.

QuoteFebruary 14 Challenge: Route displays/BGSes with unusual auxiliary elements

I'll start with this example in Anita, Iowa (the unusual bit being the "400 FT" placard):

I'm not sure that closure banners count, but they definitely are unusual for Louisiana.
