Convenient that I just drove to Burlington, IA on Friday, for shiggles.

Here are two routes that I had in my collection of shield cutouts, but I couldn't find originals for.  That meant I had to go photograph them again in some capacity.  So I did that Friday.

Niether of these can compare to SignGeek101's example :-D

25 km to Kitchener, ON

If I stretch the truth and say I'm from "Toronto", like my family does on vacation outside thr province, then I have one with 128 km.

Except that it's clearly over a lane that exits only. If you follow the white line under the sign, you'll end up in the exit.

Sure, but by the time you actually reach the point where the lane in question comes into existence, you can no longer see the sign referencing it, unless you make a habit of craning your neck to look straight up while driving. It may technically be correct, but it's far less clear than the old way (this practice, as I understand, came into existence with the 2009 MUTCD). Every time I'm on I-285, I see out-of-state drivers not familiar with the actual ramp layout making unnecessary and sometimes dangerous lane changes because of these signs.

Anyway, this is a photo thread, so let's get to the photos.

QuoteAugust 15, 2017:  Post exit only tabs that are erroneous, appearing over lanes that aren't exclusive to exiting traffic.

Here's a great example where the road geometry makes it even less clear. There are six lanes on I-285 westbound heading into this interchange. Two lanes "exit only", leaving...five lanes remaining? Not that you'd know that because of the curve.

At the next interchange, the error is more clear, with the exit only arrow over what is obviously an option lane as, again, two lanes depart from six to leave...five.

And as for this one...well, this one speaks for itself. (OK, I guess it is an exit only lane for exit 34, but...)

Are we looking at the same picture???
That lane clearly splits.

Here's an identical situation, showing what the sign SHOULD look like.  The yellow "only" message should be confined only to the rightmost lane.

We discussed this in another thread someplace (can't remember where). As I recall from that thread, jbnv is correct in that if you are under the sign you must exit. It is indeed confusing, especially in areas such as SLC where the new and old sign types are mixed.

But yeah, it might be a sub-challenge or something like that. I know some people don't care for those, but oh well.

QuoteAugust 17, 2017: Show signs, gantries, streetlights, etc, with bird nests on them.  Basically anything but a nest in a tree.

I only have GSV for these as I'm not much of a picture taker when on the road.

Here is an eagle's nest on SR-417 just north of the Lake Jessup toll plaza in Sanford, FL.  There are several other nests on trees in the area, but this one has been here for years.  At times there are huge sticks and branches up there.

Finally, in Orlando at the corner of Bumby and Robinson, there is a locally-famous birdhouse that has been there forever.  When they changed out the light masts several years back, they actually made the effort of putting the birdhouse back.  Some people claim there is a camera in it, but that isn't true.  Here is a brief backstory (http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2009-12-19/news/0912180236_1_birdhouse-signal-intersection)
QuoteBumby intersection is for the birds -- again
December 19, 2009|By Mark Schlueb, Orlando Sentinel
The Bumby Avenue birdhouse is back.

The simple but storied red-and-white birdhouse that sat atop a traffic signal at Bumby Avenue and Robinson Street since the mid-1940s disappeared several months ago. Neighborhood residents and commuters who had grown attached to it weren't alarmed at first; it had disappeared before for maintenance or replacement. But when it didn't reappear, people feared a beloved -- albeit obscure -- piece of Orlando history was gone for good.

Margaret De Loy, 73, implored the city's traffic-signal technicians to replace it.

"It seemed really important to Margaret that it be brought back," signal chief John Falango said. "She said she'd grown up looking at the birdhouse, and her kids had grown up looking at the birdhouse."

De Loy said the birdhouse's first incarnation was installed about 1945 by one of Falango's predecessors, Aubrey Hickman, a family friend and deacon at De Loy's church. It was his job to clear nests out of the city's traffic lights.

"He felt so bad about it that he went out to his workshop and built a little birdhouse," said De Loy, who lives a few blocks from the intersection. "The birds thought it was wonderful -- they moved in immediately."

It has been occupied ever since, usually by wrens, and replaced every time it has been blown down. The most recent version was donated by a resident after the 2004 hurricanes. This time, signal technician Scott Fulkerson built a new one in his own workshop, just as Hickman did more than 60 years ago. It's patterned after a photograph of the one that disappeared.

"We tried to make it look exactly the same," Falango said.
