Conrail doesnt exist any longer....that would either be CSX or Norfolk Southern

No, Conrail still owns tracks in the NYC-Philly and Detroit "shared assets areas". Customers deal directly with CSX or NS, but I believe Conrail maintains the property and operates the local trains.

That would be Conrail. But aren't signs on state highways generally owned by the state?
Hard to tell which side of the ROW that was on, though almost certainly now on railroad property. I imagine it belongs to whichever side the pole is grounded on.

I stumbled upon this gem on US 130 southbound near Deepwater, NJ today...

I was hoping somebody would stand the sign back up.  If it's leaning over, some goofus might be more apt to take it down and throw it away.

Any idea how long those images take to load on a California desert connection?
I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

It was a Purdue student in the photo, especially since it is US 52. I would know that "P" logo anywhere, since I spent the better part of 5 yrs at that place.

A fellow I follow on Flickr sometimes finds some colored Florida shields still in use. Here's one, geotagged.

wow, nice!  Any older and it would say "WASHINGTON, D. C." on it.

They have freight service to Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

'They' meaning who? If you want to ship freight by rail to any of those places, you use CSX or NS (or CN or CP as applicable). CSX and NS essentially contract with the remnants of Conrail to do the movements in the SAAs, if I'm not mistaken.

Spotted on a bike ride yesterday.  Evidence that US 29 takes 11th St and not 13th as some official maps/GIS shapefiles indicate:

are we going by de facto or de jure definition?  if the former, then indeed, that is indeed US-29, because it is signed as US-29 by, ostensibly, an authority who has the right to sign it.  if the latter, then the sign might be in an erroneous location.

I wasn't aware that it was supposed to use 13th; 11th lets it avoid Logan Circle, which (avoiding circles) was presumably the point of the rerouting away from New Hampshire Avenue.

This one is interesting in that, to my knowledge, MnDOT has never used 3di-sized shields for 2-digit Interstate routes.  This is on a St. Paul city street.

agentsteel53

that is an awesome find!  looks to me like a 30x25, but with 9" number instead of the 8" that the 1961 specification calls for.  Am I correct in that eyeballing?  (any chance you can go up there with a measuring tape for me and get me height, width, and height of the digit "4"?)

(it may be a 21x18 and I totally misidentified the shape)

Not anymore.  I snapped this photo about 20 minutes before I headed back East.

(EDIT) MnDOT's 3di shield size has long been 30x24.  I don't recall this being a small shield, so that's probably the size (or something very similar).  The aspect ratios suggest that these numerals are 10in numerals, which has also long been a MnDOT standard for Interstate shields.

gotcha.  the layout (margin width, crown height) is 1961 spec.  if so, it would be 30x25.  looks to be so from the photo.  (for some reason, instead of scaling to the proportional 28x24 between the 21x18 and 42x36 sizes, the feds made the standard 30x25.)

I think they might have taken an old blank and slapped on the new-size digits when they switched from 1961 to 1970 spec in 1973.  Given that it's a 30x25, the 10" numbers would fit well even with the older-style larger margins and crown.

also, the fact that the numerals are Series DM instead of Series D reinforces the implication that it's an MnDOT issue, as DM is an old standard.

Most likely a state-aid project from way back when, so while they'd follow MnDOT spec, the local jurisdiction (Ramsey County in this particular case) would be responsible.

These are some cool pics. I'm gonna go hunt me some cool old signs.
Could you imagine getting directions from a guy with tourettes?

did not know that such a thing was done.  very cool of them to follow the "Series DM" part of the specification, as there are so few DM shields left in Minn.  I know of a 35 on an old US-65 alignment, which is - shockingly enough - in an even worse state of preservation than that 94.

This old "Bus Only" sign on Smithfield Street here in Pittsburgh has been lost.  During filming yesterday (Aug 13th) for Batman, one of the vehicles hit it and it exploded on contact. :(

I'll add a link to the video if they put it on KDKA's website.
