Our local TV weatherguy reminded us in Central Ohio that we reached between -28 to -40 for lows on this day back in 1994.

Our weatherguy did the same here in Pittsburgh. -22F in 1994 here.  Coldest EVER recorded temperature here.

I remember that day.  It was in the -20s in Akron/Cleveland too.  I was one of the few that went in to work.

The other memorable thing about that day was a Global Warming Conference/Event/Symposium scheduled for Cleveland State University was canceled because of the weather!  :sombrero:

More snow rolling in tonight, going to at least 5 AM.

We only had about an inch or two yesterday, but it froze during the nighttime hours.  Getting home from work was slower than normal and only the main roads were clear.

By now, it looks like most of the snow and ice on the roads has melted except for any shaded areas.

Snow has turned evening rush hour in DC into an absolute nightmare.  Even the Feds cutting loose 2 hours early didn't help.

The problem was the rain we had during the day, which washed away the pre-treatment the DOTs had done.  So the rain turning to sleet then to heavy wet snow meant the roads had no chance.

Here's the view on US 1 in Huntington (south of the Beltway).  Drivers were having EXTREME difficulty trying to get up the hill.  And this is only the first of several hills on US 1.  By far not the only situation like this in the DC area.

Word is that I-70 west of Frederick is even worse of a nightmare.

Nowhere near as bad here.  But, we got another inch or two here.  Just enough to muck up the roads this morning and make the locals restless.  This is the most number of winter storms we've had since I've moved to Tennessee.  Of course, this winter is still a picnic compared to more northerly locales.

I usually drive home from my office in downtown DC, but this time left my car in an underground garage, and started my way back home around 5pm (my usual quitting time is 6:30pm).  Metrorail was a mess, but Metrobus was even worse, with almost no service at the normally busy Ballston Metro station and, according to other riders, even less at the Rosslyn station.  I heard others on my route had been waiting up to two hours, rather than the usual twenty minutes between buses.  What buses were out there often were spinning their wheels and nearly getting stuck while leaving their stops.  My seven-mile trip home took over two hours.

I-676 in Phila at the 8th Street exit, EB, there is a slight upgrade.  There were 3 tractor trailers and 5 cars stuck or stranded there.  I was able to watch this via one of the PennDOT camera while surfing.  One of the tractor trailers you could see pull forward a few feet, move back, pull forward, for about 45 min, all stuck against the center median barrier.  The cops were forcing everyone off the exit, traffic was backed up for quite a while.  You could see a pack of about 30 people coming over and helping to push people over to exit.  Eventually PennDOT plows were able to make their way through traffic, PennDOT tow trucks were able to tow the stranded cars off, and a larger tow truck was able to pull the tractor trailer up the hill.

According to the Phila Inquirer...something like 150 SEPTA buses were stuck, some as long as 12 hrs.  One bus had passengers who slept in the bus overnight.

Philadelphia did not do well today.  But we weren't expecting what we got - the forecast kept going up during the day yesterday and through the storm.  I had to go to work (my employer's policy is that we only close if there's a state of emergency; if the schools close, that triggers a "two-hour grace period for late arrivals.")

So I left home about 9:30.  At some point I noticed that the streets hadn't been actually cleaned, so much as had the snow packed into an inch-or-two-thick layer of slippery stuff.

Was out for an errand earlier this evening and it's very quiet, streets still messy; went out of my way to check on my own car (parked on the street two blocks from home) and saw it's going to take some effort to extricate it this weekend if we don't get a good amount of melting.

Certain neighborhoods of Philadelphia have steep hills, and due to bad experiences in ice storms during the '90s, I think certain bus routes in those neighborhoods just pre-emptively stop running in snowstorms now.  I heard about that one bus that was stuck overnight.  The worst story in this media market was a pedestrian in Wilmington, Del., who was run over by a plow.

It's like déjà vu all over again.  Apparently on Wednesday night, I-78 was closed due to stuck vehicles, although this time it happened south of the Allentown-Bethlehem area.

Expecting snow starting Tuesday night and lasting all Wednesday. Will we have a snow day?  :jumping:

Here in MI we are under a winter storm watch. In fact all counties here in southeast Michigan (except Monroe and Lenawee) are under a winter storm watch. We might have the highest snowfall totals since January of 2005!!!   This is the same system that is hitting the nation from Oklahoma to Maine, so people like you PennDOTFan, watch out!

We're getting some rare thundersleet (or as NWS Norman is reporting, "a thunderstorm with sleet was reported") here. Most of the casino workers that were at work will probably have to stay on shift for a few extra hours due to call-ins, then go to sleep in the hotel. I lucked out and had today off for my birthday.

We're looking at 18-24+ inches of snow when all is said and done late Wednesday here in SW Chicagoland.  Personally, I think we'll see 24" locally.  The NWS has us in the 20+ inch zone, and the most I saw was from Jerry Taft on ABC 7 with one model predicting, I kid you not, over 32" for my city.  :-o

Should be interesting.  I'll double check the thumb screws on the Yooper Scooper (snow scoop).  Beats the crap out of a snow blower - no gas, no clogs, no snow blowing back in my face.  :sombrero:

I guess we're going to be iced in here in Ohio between US 40 & 30. South of I-70 it supposed to be all rain.

NWS upgraded the winter storm warning to a blizzard waring in the st. louis metro area, and none of the people on KTVI/KPLR ever recalled the NWS using that waring for St. Louis County.

Major ice storm is still brewing for counties just south and east of St. Louis though.

MDOTFanFB

Here's an update I found. Now all counties in Southeast Michigan are under a blizzard warning!

Thankfully, we're being spared that.  I don't want to think how an area like Nashville would react to a true blizzard.  It's warm enough here that we're just getting rain.  But, we've got a wind advisory until tomorrow morning.  (sounds like the same storm to me)

Unlike the penny-ante storms we get down here where people hoard bread, milk and eggs, the storm you guys farther north look to be getting is the kind to make sure you have plenty of supplies and stay someplace safe and warm.

This morning I woke up at 7, looked outside, and saw that it didn't look too bad. Did my usual morning routine, but decided to add an extra five minutes to my usual fifteen-minute walk to the lab. Holy cow... it ended up taking me an hour to walk a mile in that stuff (though that included warming up in the lobby of the university's dorms for fifteen minutes in the middle of the walk). While I was in the lobby, I was watching KOCO and they were reporting -20F wind chills.

It snowed here!!! Like an inch and no school.. but it's supposed to get down to 9° tonight.
It sucks that my basketball game got canceled though, cause school did..
It started at 78° yesterday (1-31-11) then it dropped to 55° around 8:00pm, it started raining at about 7:00pm, then it turned to hail, then the hail covered the ground, it almost looked like snow..

Then at about 1:00am the rain turned to snow.

I work for a medical supply company and we're already being advised about trucks and UPS not being able to deliver today and perhaps tomorrow. Maybe the new Storm of the Century?
