Are they intentionally meant to be historical in nature, or has New Mexico unilaterally re-commissioned US 66?

Anyway, now I really want to see them.

I just don't think they know the difference  :-D  they are guide signs on mainline I-40... and they have the historical shield designations.

Not a bad theory when you consider it's New Mexico; after all, they think this is an acceptable US shield:

Although, I must say, I actually kind of like it.

I absolutely hate it.  Why distort the perfectly good 24x24 shield image into a 30x24 frame when you can have this?

that photo taken in November '09... yep, still around in the same vicinity as the awful wide shield that replaced another example of that perfectly good classic sign.

(I really need to change my profile to say "down with wide shields"!  That's about the first "modernization" programs that brought about such abominations as Clearview, narrow-stroke-huge-number interstate shields, and the obese US shields that the MUTCD seems obsessed with these days.  Give me a classic 380 as seen several photos below over the modern demented designs any day.)

I like it somewhat sarcastically because it's just so stupid, in so many ways.  In the vicinity of that shield are a number of older shields in the classic style that look so great, like these:

You can see the foreground shields have graceful curves, contrasting with the wide 180 shield in the background where the idea seems to be maximize the white area inside the rectangle while making a token effort to maintaining the US shield shape.  The older shields are much more appealing.

But we're getting off topic...
