Pouring hydrogen peroxide in your ears to cure common colds
« on: August 29, 2019, 10:57:54 PM »

Anyone else ever do this? I read about this on a website back in 2004, and I began trying it. I think it works, but I can't be 100% sure, since I always try it early enough that the symptoms may just be a false alarm anyway. Once back in 2015, I failed to try it, because I got wrapped up in an episode of 'CHiPs'. When the show was over, it was too late. It should be done early.

Parents sure thought it worked but I always thought it was Placebo Effect.  My wife thinks the same thing about Vicks Vabor Rub on the chest as a cold remedy.

That one actually works.  It does loosen up the mucus in your chest and makes your cough more productive.  My mom started me on that from a young age.

There's no way it could work—a cold is an upper respiratory infection and doesn't involve the ear canal.

Never heard of this being a cure for colds, but it is one method for cleaning your ears if you get a wax buildup. Don’t know whether it might be effective at relieving that clogged feeling you often get in your ears when you have a cold.

Actually, yes.

Works quite well, although it's not an overall "cure", it reduces the swelling and congestion in my head.

I used a 50/50 mixture with peroxide and isopropyl alcohol. I'll use a needle-less syringe to inject a few drops into my ear canal; keep your head tilted to one side for a few minutes at a time. I've found it reduces the swelling and inflammation of my ear canal, which happens to me twice a year when flying, and gets compounded during descent and landing. Or just from some random air pocket which won't nicely leave my ear until I can take a hot shower.

I guess my head is shaped like a Speak & Spell. It's seemed to work for me for the past 15 years.

I’ll have to try that out the next time I have the cold.  She also thinks it’s funny to break out the Vicks whenever someone has the slightest problem.  Apparently some people think it’s some sort of elixir or something like that?

Back around 1989, I saw an article about some baseball player who ate VapoRub to cure colds. I've never tried this, and I probably wouldn't recommend it.

Remember that there is no cure for the cold. You can make the symptoms less terrible, but there's no cure.

As for hydrogen peroxide, the only thing it's good for, as someone else pointed out, is cleaning your ears.  Research has shown that when used on a cut, it does not help prevent an infection.

And VapoRub doesn't actually open up your nasal passages.  It just makes them feel like they're opened up, which can be just as nice.

Oh it's good for other things too, but only when far more concentrated than the stuff you can buy at the store is:

Two men walk into a bar. The first orders a glass of H2O. The second says I'll have a glass of H2O2. The second man dies.

Actually, it is a very effective antiseptic against a broad spectrum of microbes, not only bacteria, but viruses, yeasts and spores. It is so effective, in fact, that it can damage new formation of cells = this may inhibit healing and promote scar formation.

Again, you're not considering concentration. The three percent solution (or whatever it is) you can buy at Walgreens probably does very little/jack shit. But I'll guarantee that thirty percent hydrogen peroxide solution will kill a lot of things—maybe even the user. :)

The Eustachian tubes beg to differ. The ears, nose, and throat are all connected, hence ENT specialists.

What Needs To Die A Horrible Death Is Dancing "404" Dancing Around when a broken link to an image instead of the simple Red X that used to be there in the 1990s. The Red X needs to be brought back. The Dancing 404 and any thing else that needs to dance around needs to die a horrible death. And also J Query needs to die a horrible death. That is what needs to die a horrible death.

Also Chrome's practice of showing nothing at all and ignoring width/height attributes for images that aren't loaded or have an issue loading.  I set those attributes specifically so the page wouldn't change size (and therefore scrolling would be unaffected) while the images are still loading, and there's Chrome stripping them out.  Plus, as a user, I'd rather see if an image doesn't load than have it invisibly fail, because in the latter I often don't know that an image is supposed to be there at all.
