Quote from: SEWIGuy on April 02, 2025, 02:35:04 PMI don't think cemeteries take up that much space. And no, you shouldn't put them in floodplains unless you want to rebury people constantly.

There's a reason most of the graves in New Orleans are above ground.

Quote from: D-Dey65 on April 02, 2025, 02:19:57 PMRegarding the Confederate associated monuments and other stuff, I say if we're going to have people who want to expose unflattering aspects of US history such as slavery, we should also be willing to expose unflattering aspects such as the Confederate States of America and the post-Civil War efforts to ruin the advances of Reconstruction. The C.S.A. did occupy various states in the southern US, so if you see a flag of Spain, the UK, France or other nations in the Old Tallahassee Capitol Building, it shouldn't be a bad thing to see the "Stars and Bars" among them and shouldn't be viewed as an endorsement of white supremacy, or segregation. The confederates had battles on old trails that became roads, as well as courthouses, train stations, and other sites, and even cemeteries where they buried their dead. So when I see confederate monuments at these locations, it's just part of history as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't make me think white people are better than everyone else, and anyone who isn't white had better do as they're told. And if you actually think white people are better than everyone else, and non-whites should "stay in their places," then you're an idiot.

I don't believe we should be honoring Confederate generals with their names on military bases.

Has anyone else slept the night in a cemetery?  I did once, in Macomb, IL.  I had come in on Amtrak that night and was hitchhiking out the next morning.  Walked up to the cemetery, spread out an old shower curtain as a ground cloth, tucked into my sleeping bag, and then had a hard time sleeping through the freight train whistles all night.  Other than that, though, it was very peaceful.

I'm glad that cemetery was there.  Where else would k12 have wanted this poor traveler to have slept the night?

You know what you were doing is illegal right? But if that doesn't matter, there are parks, parking lots, and woods.

I've camped at some in remote ghost towns in Arizona.  Usually they had the most room to put a tent up.

Yes, being there overnight was illegal under 765 ILCS 835/1.  I suppose I could have found a city park without posted overnight restrictions.  But parking lots?  When's the last time you slept under the stars in a parking lot?

I've slept in the bed of a pickup truck at the trailhead parking lot before climbing a 14er.

I'm pretty sure sleeping in the bed of someone's pickup would have been illegal too.

Well, I've also hammock camped right next to a parking lot at the trailhead of a 14er as well. Technically not "in" the parking lot, but I was "at" the parking lot.

One thing that doesn't bother me, but it's an attempt to steer the conversation away from whatever this is: today the real time tracker for Lévis buses had an outage, so people had to rely on the regular schedule... granted, real time tracking hasn't been a thing here for a long while (I mean, when I first moved in Québec City there was no such thing), and the bus will tend to be there more or less on time, but it's such a nice thing to have that it's easy to miss it when it breaks down.

Quote from: roadman65 on April 01, 2025, 09:47:42 PMOf course politics didn't enter the norm before.  Just like for years things were named after Confederate Generals and now all of a sudden we have to rename as it's all of a sudden offensive to people.

Or what about the Cleveland Indians all of a sudden became offensive to Native Americans.  The FSU Seminoles almost had to change but the Seminole Tribe spoke up and said leave us alone.

"All of a sudden" for those who have been ignoring pleas from non-white folks in this country for generations. Protests against the Cleveland Openly Racist Baseball Team Name began 50 years ago, for example.

Related this conversation to all these illegal overnights sleeps I recently pulled an overnight in a parking garage.  My wife in the emergency room two years ago and I didn't feel like driving home from the hospital.  I just reclined the back seat and slept in the Forester.  I wasn't clear on the legality of what I was doing, but I was pretty certain it wasn't to the letter of the law.

The only reason sleeping in your car would be illegal is because businesses don't want poor people sleeping in their cars in their parking lots.

I seem to recall Walmart is one of the exceptions to this?  Wasn't someone on forum talking about taking advantage of sleeping in Walmart parking lots in lieu of hotel stays a couple years ago?

That's a well known thing generally.  My wife's grandparents used to do it all the time.

The last time I slept on something other than a piece of furniture, almost always a bed, was a LONG time ago.

Specifically for a long time, not sure if it's still the case, RVers in Alaska were allowed to use Walmart parking lots in the larger cities that had them.

Bruce

It varies from store to store. Urban locations are less likely to allow it because it might be prohibited by local laws enacted in response to homelessness.

Quote from: roadman65 on April 02, 2025, 02:05:19 PMPoint is Cleveland Indians were a name for years. It took till now to realize it.  It could have been renamed years ago but wasn't.

It was noticed by a lot of people. There were just a whole lot more people that were much more vocal about keeping the name. No matter if others were offended by it.

There were a number of racial slurs that were at least acceptable, maybe not in polite society, but regularly used none the less. Does that mean that now that we've severely curtailed the use of those slurs, that all of a sudden they became offensive to people?

It took time for people to change their attitudes and realize that there were opinions other than their own.

I want to say Sports Illustrated did an article about the Indians logo in the 1990s.  I recall they showed what said logo would look like if it was designed to follow other racial stereotypes to convey how insensitive it was.  The controversy there definitely isn't new and that logo didn't help.

It depends on the municipality and/or the owner of the parking lot.

Example: The Walmart in Cortez, CO signs their "KOA" Parking Lot by saying something like 48 hours maximum.

The 2 Walmarts in Grand Junction Have signage that deters overnight camping parking, and the local GJPD  enforces it regularly.
