Big John

I was checking Cheerios and the largest box had a bigger unit price that the next smaller box. Both regular price.

I pointed this out to the attendant "What is wrong with this picture?" - the display of the smaller bottles had a higher unit price than the display with the larger two liter bottles of the same stuff.

How is this unusual? Have you never realized in the years since that 20 oz bottles are now like $2.29 and 2 liter bottles are only 40 cents more?

Or, on a much smaller scale, something I see at the supermarket all the time:  The 10-ounce can of product costs $1.99 and the 20-ounce can costs $3.99.

Correct.  What |mgk920| describes is completely normal.  It's the way I expect it to be.  As the size of the packaging increases, the unit price decreases.  A single 4-ounce tin of Acme Widget Powder costs $2.19 (54.75¢ per ounce), but a two-pack of 10-ounce tins of Acme Widget Powder costs $9.99 (49.95¢ per ounce).  Nothing wrong with that picture at all.

It is, in fact, the opposite of what |Scott5114| said bothers him:

Quote from: Scott5114 on May 29, 2025, 06:13:12 AMWhen larger packages of items have a higher per-unit cost than smaller ones (e.g. 12-packs of soda being $5 each and a 24-pack being $11). This seems to happen a lot at WinCo, but fortunately they usually print a per-ounce or per-unit price on the price tag so it's easier to get the better deal.

I think mgk is saying that the smaller bottle was more expensive than the larger one.

I should point out this doesn't just happen at WinCo with soda (that's just something I buy frequently enough to have a good feel for the "usual" price and how sales affect it). They had Hot Pockets in 4 and 12 packs, and the 12-pack was more than three times the price of the 4-pack. I've learned that I have to actually check now, whereas at my old grocery store in Oklahoma I could pretty much always assume the larger packages would have a lower per-unit price (the exception usually being when the smaller packages were on sale and the larger ones weren't, which wasn't that common).

I feel like, if nothing else, the vendor's reduced packaging cost (one box as opposed to three) should be passed on to me if I buy the bigger box. It seems insane for me to buy three small boxes and come out ahead compared to one big box.

I have found unit prices to be just incorrectly calculated more frequently than I care for.

Oh, and paper products where the unit price is by sheet rather than area annoys me greatly.

Better than that 12=27! 4=53! garbage that the manufacturers do...

It also kind of bothers me that they have names for these different lengths of rolls, but you normally can't actually choose smaller options. I had to quit using the toilet paper holder at my house in Oklahoma because the only rolls my grocery store stocked got so large they physically wouldn't fit between the toilet paper holder and the toilet anymore.

It bothers me when both windows on one side of the car are rolled down by a different amount.  On each side of the car, assuming both windows are rolled down, I want the tops of them to line up.

2025 Ford Expedition SUV = 4 Old Ford Festivas!

How they get away with that kind of carnival barker tactic is bizarre. But I guess it's not that expensive a product to be overly concerned...

That's because you are paying for the convenience of the smaller bottle - it is generally cold and can be opened and enjoyed as soon as you leave the store. A two liter is warm, and you aren't drinking it from the bottle. You have to lug it home, get it cold, and pour it before you can enjoy.

As for the difference between 12 and 24 packs, that's generally based on inventory at the bottler at any given time.

Both were warm.  I bought a 2L bottle and used it (like I have always done and still do today) to refill a smaller empty bottle in my car.

That doesn't seem very promising.

I just found out that the old Dairy Barn on NY 112 across from Roe Boulevard East in North Patchogue was finally closed. I know many of them have been shutting down left and right, but I wanted one chance to get a picture of the place before it was demolished.

The latest GSV of the place is from July 2023.

Quote from: Scott5114 on May 22, 2025, 03:37:59 PMfreak out about the possibility of not having a gas stove

I would much rather have an electric stove than a gas stove. I don't like the concept of an open flame inside the house, and I'm extremely sensitive to carbon monoxide, so an electric stove is the easy choice.

I have never even seen a paper straw, much less used one. They aren't mandated in Arkansas or Oklahoma, and apparently nobody offers them around here. From what I have read and heard, they are terrible.

Quote from: thenetwork on May 23, 2025, 09:28:56 AMWhen I was growing up in the 2 or 3 years leading up to 1976, there was so much hype about the nation's Bicentennial.  TV shows and specials were being created, signs going up (at least in Ohio) designating "Bicentennial Communities" at their city limits, and so on.

Fast forward to today, and little over 7 months away from our country's 250th Birthday (another significant milestone IMHO), and I have heard little to no information on plans for an extended celebration like they did in 1976.

There's very little to celebrate today.

Where are you finding $5 12 packs of coke? They're over $8 here. Unless you are talking about the Walmart brand cola, which sucks.

7501 W. Washington Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89128

On Wednesday they had 12-pack Mtn Dew for $5.48, and Diet Dr. Pepper and regular Coke for $6.28. (When not on sale, the Diet Dr. Pepper is $8.12. Mtn Dew is usually somewhere in the $7 range.)

I went into Smith's once and they were selling them for over $10. Needless to say I haven't gone into Smith's for anything since then.

Shoprite will have 4 for $20 sales on rare occasion to get the $5/12 pack pricing when 4 are purchased.

There's very little to celebrate today.

The Philly Inquirer ran a story about this a while back. Planning started in the late 2010s. Covid came and derailed a lot of the planning, and it just never really got back on track again.

It appears any celebration will be a normal yearly celebration with some Semiquincentennial flare added in.

I can't help to think that the issues with security of large crowds and costs plays into the reduction of events also.

I didn't know you had Bell's palsy, HB. That has to be rough. Take care of yourself and get and stay healthy, man. I'm rooting for you.
