What web hosting services do you use? I have used Doteasy.com in the past. Just waiting for domains to go on sale there again.

I use GoDaddy, decent deal, adequate hosting. They could be better but for the money I pay its worth it

Flickr 25 dollars per year for a pro account with unlimited upload of pictures.

We are talking about website hosting not photo hosting right?

I used to have my own domain name but I let it expire and now I cannot get it again.

I think godaddy but don't quote me on that... I set it up like 2 years ago, and every year they email me with a request for my credit card number and they charge me some money and everyone is happy

Oxyrack, definitely. Me and un and some other people's sites used to be on oxyhost, but all transferred to the same server on Oxyrack recently due to poor service on Oxyhost. I do NOT recommend it to anyone

I use http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ –instead of paying in advance you keep some money in an account with them and they withdraw from it a few cents at a time for bandwidth and daily storage costs. When it reaches $0 your site goes down until you put more money in. It's pretty good–you have unlimited space but you pay something like 1¢ per MB per day. So if your budget is kinda tight you can take part of your site down for a while to use less money. Usually $15 lasts me about a month or so.

Bump. I suppose I'm looking for bare-bones free hosting for mainly HTML and some small images. I see Mapmikey still uses Angelfire for South Carolina; it has some ads but nothing too obtrusive. How is it with uploading? Anyone have experience with others?

How much traffic do you expect? I just host myself on a macmini, but even a basic Linux computer would work well. I have a domain name registered with dyndns and my router automatically updated the name server records whenever my ISP (Brighthouse) changes my IP. It works well for what I use it for, mainly sharing files with friends and posting images online and such.

Could anyone recommend some paid hosting for a business I'm starting? I would stick with NFS but it unfortunately doesn't support HTTPS...

I thought about self-hosting, but my Comcast agreement forbids it, and I'm already hosting a Minecraft server for my kids, so I'll pass. ;)

I've been with Dreamhost for 7 years now, and took advantage of any and all promotions they offered early - and acted as a "guinea pig" when they asked if subscribers would volunteer to have their sites relocated to new servers to help shake out bugs and issues. Downtime has been minimal for me - to the point where I cannot recall the last time I experienced it.

So today I get unlimited domain hosting, unlimited storage, and unlimited bandwidth. I don't make nearly as much use out of it as I could or should, so if some roadgeeks are interested, I'd be happy to work with you on hosting a site.

I own some subject related URLs already (roadgeek.info, roadgeek.us, roadscholar.info, and roadscholar.us), and have unlimited subdomains, so it could be something as simple as "ne2.roadgeek.info" if you were interested - or I can host a full-on domain. I use Filezilla to deal with uploads - nice and easy. DH offers some "1-Click Installs" of image/media hosting apps like Gallery and WordPress blogs among others. I can usually have a basic site up and running in 24 hours.

Feel free to contact me off-list. I'm easy to work with. ;)

I've used 1and1 for my local SCA group, but they aren't as good or reliable as they used to be. I think they got bought out because they were starting to have downtime issues. When I transferred ownership, I still kept getting billed. When I tried to cancel the account, that was also difficult to do: lots of hoops to jump through.

Interesting - they changed packages on me a little while ago but I actually ended up with unlimited bandwidth (no more worrying about overage charges!) and more storage for the same rate. Never had any downtime issues I know of. One problem: outsourcing of technical support, which was NOT the case when I first signed up. I'm not leaving anytime soon.

Just say NO to 1and1... they don't know how to bill... period. They never cancel accounts that you request closed and instantly send your unpaid balance (for services you never ordered) to NCO for collections. I don't even think they have a billing department with the way they pawn stuff off to NCO, one good thing is NCO is receptive to debt verification letters, they drop everything once challenged.

a despicable business practice.  I am going through the same horseshit with T-Mobile: I am hoping that my attorney can get them to issue me a written apology along with the cancellation of the debt and the notification that my credit will not be affected.

it's always fun when someone's first point of contact with you is a third-party collections service.

It's not free, but I've been using Site5 for years with no issues at all. And I recommend NameCheap for domain name registrations.
