For Massachusetts, I would go with MA 2 west of Greenfield, especially in the fall.

There are a few candidates in California; I will go with California SR 1 along the coast north of Morro Bay.

Max Rockatansky

I could do a massive list for California alone but I would offer a more obscure choice; CA 49.

jmacswimmer

The obvious choice in Maryland would be I-68 (Sideling Hill, anyone?), but curious if any of the other Maryland forumers have different roads in mind.
"Now, what if da Bearss were to enter the Indianapolis 5-hunnert?"
"How would they compete?"
"Let's say they rode together in a big buss."
"Is Ditka driving?"
"Of course!"
"Then I like da Bear buss."
"DA BEARSSS BUSSSS"

If I'm understanding it correctly, this is this different from the Most Consistently Scenic State Highway in Your State thread because it allows for partial highway segments.  Right?

Yeah

I'm not sure we need another whole thread.

Oh, I don't know.  This is more like "most scenic drives in your state", which is arguably a more useful question to ask.

NY: Either NY-97 at Hawk's Nest, or NY-218 (Storm King Pkwy), or something in Harriman, idk
NJ: Old Mine Rd, or I-80 in the Delaware Water Gap. NJ-29 is slightly overrated.
RI: Ocean Drive?
VT: VT-100 (duh?)
UT: Good lord, so many choices. UT-9, UT-12, UT-128, US-163...

Dunno the rest

Nah, Big Sur is more iconic

That's fair; I thought we had done a thread on that as well, but maybe I was conflating it with the thread already mentioned.

Quite possible that we have.  I didn't search for anything except the one I linked to.

Toss-up between Alabama 176 around little River Canyon or Alabama 281 in Talladega National Forest.

I haven't driven the later route yet, so AL 176 works for me.

I have 3 for Michigan, in no particular order:

  • US-2 from St Ignace to west of Naubinway
  • M-28 from Munising to near Harvey
  • M-26 from Copper Harbor to Eagle River.

How do you leave out M-22?

Probably to put out something more obscure that doesn't get talked about as much.  Personally I would put M-26 above M-22.

My top choice is WIS 13 from Port Wing to Ashland. Strangely with all the US route fictional insanity, I have never seen anyone propose US 63 extended over that section, so I'll be the first. :)

Finishing WIS 35 is on my short list of plans for future drives.

Last time I was in Ashland, it was a dump, dominated by the Xcel Energy plant.

M-22 has less pure scenery, as it is a bit inland in most places.  A good candidate for runner-up, but not in my top 3.

From what I could gather from Bing Images and GSV, 176 wins by a landslide.

I've driven all of AL176 and a good chunk of AL281. I would agree with AL176.

Is CT-169 worth its national scenic byway designation, or is it overrated?

WA 410.  Some of the most dramatic mountain scenery anywhere, plus scenic semi desert and plenty of forest and some charming towns.

I would add M-123 from the mouth of the Tahquamenon River to Paradise, and Whitefish Point Rd north from Paradise.  (all of which would be part of US-31 if I were in charge!)
2di's clinched: 44, 66, 68, 71, 72, 74, 78, 83, 84(east), 86(east), 88(east), 96

Highways I've lived on M-43, M-185, US-127
