It definitely helps in windy conditions but I know North Carolina isn't one of them that does it. I've seen them in Virginia and I know Tennessee, Utah (and many other states) DO attach the traffic signals to the bridge.

I see them attached to the bridge most in SPUI interchanges.

I don't think Ohio have any under SPUIs, but there may be other instances where a traffic signal could be attached to the bridge.

Missouri does attach them to the bridge, and sometimes, under the bridge.

Yes. They attach them to the bridges on almost all SPUI interchanges. New Jersey does not though.

I've never seen any NYSDOT installed signals mounted on a bridge but there are plenty of signals in NYC mounted on bridges, elevated subways and other structures.

Hm.  I'm wondering if I saw them in Region 8.

^This is the only place where I occasionally pass through and see this...it's another example at a SPUI in Michigan.  I don't think I've seen signals attached directly to the bridge in Illinois outside of the City of Chicago. Someone might be able to fill me in on some I've missed, though.

I'm not sure if this counts as it but the pole is attached to the bridge as well as the signals on the pole.

It might be time to make a map to know which states mount their signals on the bridge and which do not.

I don't know if they are cheaper than just building two poles with span wires or whatnot. I just find them interesting that they mount them on the bridge.

It appears the majority of the country does that.

Here's some span wires between a couple bridge beams with signals mounted:

Nifty! Now I was going to ask everybody should NCDOT (and other DOTs that don't mount signals to bridges) follow the practice?

And a non-SPUI example. (The ones facing the off-ramp are a real neck-twister).

That one at I-264 and Westport Road was the one I was thinking of.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Nevada will affix traffic signals to bridges. Although the only place you see this with any regularity is SPUIs where the intersection is constructed at the same time as the freeway bridge overhead. There are other instances where signals could have been affixed to a bridge but weren't, typically because the bridge was preexisting and the intersection layout changed later.

So it seems the question isn't "which state am I in."  The question is "am I at a SPUI where the surface road crosses underneath the freeway."

As far as I know, there's only one such install in the entire state of Minnesota, at MN-55 and Lake Street in Minneapolis. If you really want to get technical, I think this intersection is a Minneapolis city install and as far as I know MNDOT as a statewide agency doesn't maintain any signals attached to bridges.
