Good freeway alternatives to toll roads to avoid the tolls.

For the expensive PA Turnpike we know of I-80 from New York to Ohio. However that's not what I'm looking for. Freeways that are closer and more regional.  Like the use of I-68 between Hancock, MD and Morgantown, WV to I-79 north for through I-70 travelers to bypass the PA Turnpike from Breezewood to New Stanton.

Then there is OH 2 between Sandusky and Elyria in Ohio of that state's turnpike.

Others that come to mind.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

VA 7 in Loudoun County is quickly becoming that way, but no one uses the extremely expensive Dulles Greenway anyway.

I-295 in New Jersey is a shunpike for the New Jersey Turnpike from the Delaware Memorial Bridges to Trenton. It has become busy and has a crazy interchange with I-76 and I-676, but it does serve.

Not a full 'freeway', but US 41/Skokie Highway in Lake County, IL serves as a 'shunpike' for the I-94 Tri-State Tollway.

I-275?

I think you mean I-295.

To avoid the Dallas North Tollway, I used to cut across to Central. I didn't have to go to Dallas enough to make getting a TollTag worth it and it added maybe 20 minutes to my drive. I finally broke down and got a TollTag this spring.

I-95 alongside Florida's Turnpike from Fort Pierce to around Boynton Beach. South of there, it flows nicer on Turnpike but it depends on your start/end points or traffic whether to drive it entire way. Much of the Turnpike is four lanes while you get a minimum of six lanes throughout 99% of I-95. If the Turnpike is critically bottlenecked, it's also a waste of money.

One of those "why pay for a hamburger when you can have free steak" moments.

It's not always the faster route, but heading from SF to Vallejo/Fairfield or from SF to Napa, I do like avoiding the Carquinez Bridge toll by taking 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge (northbound is the free direction) then 37 east.

one of my favorite toll-avoidance pathways out here, to get to Sacramento from southern San Mateo County or from San Jose:

- the standard, toll-based route: taking anything to I-680 north, where there's a toll northbound at the Benicia Bridge

- from Menlo Park: 84 east (sometimes involving an 880/Auto Mall Parkway/680 shortcut to avoid stoplights on 84 in Fremont), 580 east, 205 east, then 5 north or eventually to 99 north

- from San Jose: 680 (or 880/262/680) north, 84 east, 580 east, 205 east, then 5 north or eventually to 99 north

Do I-684 and the Palisades Interstate Parkway count as good toll-avoidance routes for people that would otherwise use the I-87 portion of the Thruway?  Years ago, as part of a Staten Island to Buffalo trip, I had my family take us down the PIP to West Point (then NY 17/I-86 from Harriman west to I-390 to avoid as much of the I-90 portion as we could)

Somehow I feel certain we've had threads on this topic before. If I can find them, I'll edit this to add the links.

I-90 is the default shunpike for the SR 520 Bridge, which is also often closed for construction work on weekends.

Not that the toll is expensive, but I-93 in southern NH to not use the Everett Turnpike.

Surprised no one has brought up Free 90 yet in greater Albany.

Could say Kingery Hwy/IL 83 does also in DuPage County. Again, not full freeway but has freeway segments

Then you have the roundabout routing of I-55, I-80 and I-39 as a shunpike for the I-90 Northwest Tollway. Or if you want something closer that is not a full freeway but does offer a freeway segment, then US 12 is a good way to go.

I-80 and I-55 if going between Chicago and the Quad Cities for I-88.
