The Ultimate 'Connected Car' Nightmare Is Playing Out In China
What happens to your connected, software-driven car when the company behind it fails, and driving features go "offline" too?
QuoteBut since software now plays such a significant role in not just features like streaming music but in key functions like battery management and recalls, what happens if those car companies close up shop or no longer support their "legacy" products? Will any of these modern SDVs be as viable on the road as my old 4Runner still is?

That doesn't seem to be the case. And we're seeing one example of that looming disaster play out right now in China.

Rest of World, the nonprofit outlet that covers global tech news, has an alarming dispatch about Shanghai-based WM Motor. The automaker filed for bankruptcy last year as China's crowded EV market plays "survival of the fittest" with the scores of car brands in that country. Your lease for advanced feature package cannot be renewed as your credit score doesn't meet our requirements for the bundled liability protection program.

And I'm sure the government is listening in and watching on the microphones and cameras that modern cars include.

Not the Chinese government.

I took it to be a knock at our government. Also praying vdeane isn't part of a trend of NY State employees actually working for the Chinese government.

Yeah, I was sure China's government was listening in (not that I have any personal experience with such), though I wouldn't put it past our government to requisition records on occasion (we know they exist thanks to the Tesla camera scandal).  DOT is just involved with traffic cameras as far as I'm aware.

Unless that's just what I want you to think... :bigass:
