Is that really truncation.........???

Interestingly, I can't find an attestation that says that truncation must be from one of the ends. Both of the dictionaries I consulted emphasize that it's a shortening by removing a portion. In Perl, the String::Truncate module takes a given string and shortens it to a given length, and you can tell it to delete from the beginning, middle, or end. Python uses truncate to shorten a file specifically and what gets truncated seems to depend on the particulars of a file pointer in such a way that I don't know that's it's a relevant example.

I always figured truncation was shortening by removing any portion, regardless of where. In mathematics it does specifically refer to shortening by removing digits to the right of a decimal point, but we're not doing mathematical truncation here.
