At the time I joined, I-97 was disliked by many for being the shortest 2di, and the subject of some zany plots to replace it with I-995 or a re-routed I-83 or I-70.

Hey, some 2di has to be the shortest.  May as well be I-97.  So choosing I-97 as my avatar is my way of trolling those people   (And it's near where I live)

(yes, I am aware that there are now shorter 2dis)

I too have no problem with I-97 being where it is. I doubt most drivers care about the significance of a highway number.

Like many of you, my avatar is the numbered highway (stuff on Travel Mapping, so no county roads) closest to my primary residence. Right now, that highway happens to be US 287. But it's the 1960s shield, because I think that it's pretty.

At least you made a good choice and did [sic] go with that fugly "287" sign that Wyoming uses with a tiny little 287 in the middle of the standard 2DUS shield.  I have also seen a 191 sign in Wyoming the same way.  Shudder.

Ha yeah, we have a couple of those in Colorado too. Here's an example: Link. It was very tempting to do so, but I couldn't find an avatar-worthy image of one.

Many in Wyoming are even smaller than that....

I just switched to US 431 since nobody else seemed to be using it. Sometimes I change it for a brand-new clinch.

My current avatar is a result of my having noticed that someone had changed their avatar to a sign pointing the way to Rainbow.  I thought it would be funny to change my avatar to a picture of the "Welcome to Rainbow" sign down the street from my home.

Since they've since reverted their avatar, I need to decide whether to revert to my prior avatar or adopt the one I've been changing to in other forums.

I have advocated all along that it be extended down the US-301 and VA-207 corridor to I-95, thus becoming a Washington outer bypass.

July is disability pride month, and was so chosen to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in July 1990. The flag in my avatar (which has been my avatar for a year and I am just too lazy to bother changing it month to month) is the disability pride flag, featuring a muted red for physical disabilities, gold for neurodiversity, white for invisible disabilities, blue for psychological disabilities, green for sensory disabilities, and the grey-black background representing mourning for victims of violence and abuse.

I'm in the video, but you can't see me—I was sitting in Seat 20D. The flight arrived at New York JFK an hour and 39 minutes before it left London (wheels up at 18:45, wheels down at 17:06).

Wow, so I've been seeing that gif in your avatar for years and years and never looked at it closely. I assumed it was a B-1 taking off. 


Mine's a shorthand of my username inside a 3DI shield.  Pretty simple.

If you look closely, you can actually see him in seat 20-D, right at the very end of the animation.

Now being well-advanced into the middle years of my life, I feel like the years are rushing by and the year 2112 will be here before we know it! Perhaps some very young members of this forum today will live long enough to actually witness these prophetic events!  Unless climate change or rogue DOTs take us all out first.

Updated my avatar, since as I noted in my earlier post, the funny-to-me element has passed.

I'm now using the standard avatar/profile image I currently use for almost all of my online accounts these days.

My primary hobby is ham radio, and the image is from my current QSL card.   It's meant to be a stylized image of much of my on-air activity: a boy and his radio, taking a quick break from work, while a cat "helps".

I've used that concept as a basis for my QSL card for many years, although several months ago I updated the image, testing my chops with image generation with AI.
