Hello from Spain, most road-friendly country in Europe :D

Hi everyone,

I live in Central Spain, I am a little bit of a roadfan, and I'm currently studying Civil Engineering so I hope to work in Transportation areas in the future.
I have some memories of I-4 in Orlando, NY 25 in NYC,... but that was a little bit long ago.
Recently I have started to get more interested in American roads and I decided to join this board to learn about them, and share opinions.

I am also interested in roads all around Europe, so we can share information about them if you want. By the way, I live in the country with the most kms. of motorways in the continent, and fighting with Germany for the best ones

If someone is a shield-fan, you can see the ones I have recently shared in the International section from Romania and Moldova, some similar to American colored ones. In Spain, road shields are just like those in my avatar picture.

I alas have never been to Spain, but I can't imagine anything being cooler than the absence of a speed limit as in Germany.

Spain has the third largest freeway network in the world, and the largest in Europe but half the population of Germany (#2)/two thirds that of France (#3).

That said, they recently lowered the freeway speed limit to 120km/h (still faster than the UK) - it was 130km/h. The Netherlands went the opposite direction at roughly the same time.

Not really that way. We have had a top speed of 120 km/h for autopistas since 1981 (and for autovías since 1992). Previous government enacted a temporary 110 km/h restriction for some months during Arab Spring as they said we would save money. Present government is studying to increase top speed to 130 km in some non-problematic stretches, but lowering speed in non-freeway roads (we have many good non-divided roads too), some people believing this is the first step towards tolling all divided roads (autopistas and autovías), as similar to Portugal.

And first sentence quoted is a main point for my road-friendliness statement, in addition to usual good quality of roads (both divided and undivided ones), although financial crisis is now slowing construction of autovías and road maintenance.

We also have second high-speed rail network in length in the world, only surpassed by China, but I wouldn't say we are so rail-friendly, as this system is good for intercity rail trips, but is taking trains away from villages and towns and increasing a lot ticket prices. And road is of course the preferred way for transporting freight.
